What does the Equal Length Mid-Pipe for F97 do to the sound?

The Equal Length Mid-Pipe for F97 / F98 BMW X3 M / X4 M evens out the distance each S58 bank travels before the exhaust merges. Active Autowerke says this gives a more aggressive and sweeter high revving tone than the factory mid-pipe, while the built-in Gen 2 resonators hold back rasp and drone.

Is this the Gen 2 version with resonators?

Yes. Active Autowerke lists this mid-pipe as its Gen 2 equal length design, which uses resonators it developed with its factories. They remove rasp with minimal change in volume and, according to Active Autowerke, reduce the drone some owners hear around 2,000 rpm and the cold start rattle.

The mid-pipe uses factory-style flanges and clamps and needs one cut on each side of the factory mid-pipe. Active Autowerke rates it as a bolt-on that most owners can perform, and the factory mid-pipe can be reinstated if needed. Working from a lift is strongly preferable on an SUV of this size.

Will it work with an aftermarket rear exhaust?

Active Autowerke designed it for rear exhausts that use factory-style fittings, but it tested only with factory and Active Autowerke parts and does not guarantee results with other brands. The Active Autowerke valved axle-back for the X3 M and X4 M is the pairing with a known outcome.

How does it compare with the single mid-pipe?

The single mid-pipe merges both banks earlier and for longer, which Active Autowerke says gives a deeper tone, and it is offered with or without a resonator. The equal length version aims for a smoother, higher revving note instead. Choose by the character you want rather than by volume alone.

Description

Active Autowerke Gen 2 Signature Equal Length Mid-Pipe for F97 / F98 BMW X3 M / X4 M

Active Autowerke’s Equal Length Mid-Pipe for F97 / F98 BMW X3 M / X4 M was built at the repeated request of owners who wanted the S58 in their SUV to sound as composed as it does in the M3 and M4. It applies the equal length principle Active Autowerke pioneered on the F8X and G8X cars, evening out the bank lengths before the exhaust merges so the twin-turbo six delivers a sweeter, more eager note as it climbs toward the limiter. This is the Gen 2 design with Active Autowerke resonators built in, so it adds character without turning a family-sized M vehicle into a drone machine on the highway. Owners who want maximum depth and volume instead should look at the Signature Single Mid-Pipe for F97 / F98.

Design and Performance

Active Autowerke developed resonators with its factories for the Gen 2 equal length mid-pipes to strip rasp from the tone while keeping the volume close to the original design, and it reports that they also reduce the 2,000 rpm buzz and the factory cold start rattle. The mid-pipe uses factory-style flanges and clamps, needs a single cut on each side of the stock mid-pipe, and the original part can go back on later.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
