Which ratio should I choose, 5.1 or 5.3?

Both are shorter than the factory 4.764. The 5.1 set uses a 5.062 ratio, and the 5.3 is the shorter of the two, giving more acceleration and less top speed. Choose based on your circuits and how you want each gear to line up with the VTEC range, and ask Bulletproof Automotive if unsure.

What is the difference between the WPC and DLC versions?

Both use WPC, a fine shot peening process that hardens the gear surface, raises fatigue strength and leaves tiny oil-holding dimples. The DLC version adds a diamond-like carbon coating on the driven gear, which the manufacturer says gives better initial bedding-in, lower friction and greater durability.

Which cars does the Final Gear Set for EP3 fit?

The Final Gear Set for EP3 is designed for the JDM EP3 Civic Type R with the K20A engine, built from 2001 to 2005, whose factory final drive the manufacturer gives as 4.764. It may not fit the US-market EP3 Civic Si, so confirm your transmission before ordering.

Will a shorter final drive cost top speed?

Yes. Lower gearing gives up some top speed in exchange for stronger acceleration and closer spacing between gears. Engine speed at a given road speed rises in every gear too, so the car will rev higher on the highway than it does on the factory ratio.

What comes in the set?

One countershaft and one ring gear. The manufacturer recommends precise assembly by a professional shop with the specified torque values, since the transmission must be opened and the gears set up correctly. Fresh transmission oil is not included, so add it to the job list.

Description

J’s Racing Final Gear Set for EP3 Honda Civic Type R

J’s Racing’s Final Gear Set for EP3 Civic Type R shortens the final drive from the factory 4.764 ratio, offered in 5.1 and 5.3 options; the 5.1 set is an actual 5.062. Lower gearing leaves peak torque where it is but shifts the torque curve toward lower rpm, trading some top speed for stronger acceleration and better spacing between gears. The Osaka tuner treats the gears with WPC, or WPC with DLC coating, for durability. It suits a circuit EP3 whose driver wants to stay in VTEC; on the highway the engine will turn higher rpm at any given speed.

Design and Performance

J’s Racing points to what VTEC owners ask for: shifting up before corner entry, holding third in VTEC without dropping to second, or using every gear up to sixth. The right final drive makes those setups possible. WPC, short for Wide Peening and Cleaning, fires fine shot at high speed to harden the gear surface, raise fatigue strength against chipping and leave tiny dimples that hold oil. The DLC version adds a diamond-like carbon coating to the driven gear for low friction and good initial bedding-in.

About J’s Racing

J’s Racing was established in Osaka in 1989, as VTEC engines and lightweight Civics and Integras were changing what a Honda could do, and it has built parts for Hondas ever since. The company develops engine response, suspension, braking, cooling and aerodynamics together as one system, then proves the parts in time attack, gymkhana, endurance and circuit racing. Its Fit lapped Tsukuba Circuit in 1’00.459, and its naturally aspirated AP1 S2000, the Maou car, became the company’s reference build for the Honda roadster. Every J’s Racing part is designed and tested in Japan, and J’s Racing USA in Carson, California handles distribution in the United States.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
