Does the S-Tai Bonnet for FL5 lower coolant temperature on track?

Yes. Spoon fitted the S-Tai Bonnet for FL5 to its Super Taikyu race car and reports water temperature held steady through summer races in air above 35 degrees Celsius. The gain comes from venting heat, since Spoon found the factory bumper already admits enough air and the real bottleneck was getting hot air out of the engine bay.

Do I still need an oil cooler with this bonnet?

No, not necessarily. Spoon says the bonnet combined with a larger capacity radiator also keeps oil temperature down. That lets a track driver avoid fitting an oil cooler and the drop in oil pressure Spoon links to one. A car that already runs a cooler can keep it, as the bonnet is designed to work with the rest of the cooling system.

Which rain cover option should I choose?

Spoon sells the bonnet with or without its rain cover panel and publishes no further detail on the cover. With large open ducts above the engine, an FL5 that is driven in wet weather is the natural home for the covered version, while a trailered track car can reasonably go without it and save the difference in price.

Does the bonnet arrive painted?

No. It is FRP finished in white gel coat, and Spoon states that it must be painted. Spoon asks for a trial fit before any paint work, and for the finished panel to air dry, kept under 40 degrees Celsius in cold or humid weather, because a paint booth heater or local heating can warp it.

Who is the S-Tai bonnet really for?

It is aimed at owners who run their FL5 hard for lap after lap, the exact use Spoon developed it for on its demo and racing cars. On a car used only on the street, the cooling gain has little to work against, so the cost and paint work are hard to justify on function alone.

Description

Spoon Sports S-Tai Bonnet for FL5 Honda Civic Type R

The Spoon Sports S-Tai Bonnet for FL5 Honda Civic Type R solves the cooling problem Spoon found on its own demo car: the factory bumper lets in plenty of air, but the bonnet could not get the heat back out. In continuous laps, engine bay heat kept cutting sessions short. Spoon answered with a central duct about three times the size of the factory outlet, flanked by side ducts that also release air pressure from the wheelhouses and add downforce at speed. The bonnet then raced on the Spoon car in the Super Taikyu series, where water temperature stayed under control in summer races run above 35 degrees Celsius. It is molded in FRP and arrives in white gel coat for paint. It is a part for an FL5 that laps regularly.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
