How much lighter is the Carbon Plug Cover for FL5?

Spoon lists the Carbon Plug Cover for FL5 at 85 g, against 700 g for the standard part it replaces, a saving of 615 g at the top of the engine. On a car of this size that will not show on a stopwatch, but it is a real reduction rather than a styling claim alone.

Yes. Spoon registers the cover for the FK8 as well as the FL5, since both use the K20C turbo. Spoon fitment names the FK8 from its October 2020 update in Japan, so owners of earlier FK8 cars should check with BA before ordering. The FL5 is covered from its 2022 launch.

Why did Spoon stop making plug covers?

Spoon could no longer secure a factory able to produce them, so the covers that once partnered its yellow head covers went out of production. The method Spoon later adopted to make its FK8 intake duct solved the problem, and the K20C cover was the first to return, with other engines planned after it.

What is it made from?

Prepreg carbon fiber combined with Kevlar. Prepreg uses fiber already impregnated with resin, which allows a controlled resin content and a light, consistent part. The Kevlar adds strength, and the result is the 85 g cover Spoon lists, with the exposed weave owners expect from Spoon composite parts.

Does it suit the Spoon head cover?

Yes. The pairing of a Spoon yellow head cover with a Kevlar plug cover was a Spoon staple for years, and this part was made to bring that look to the turbo Type R. It works equally well with the Spoon red head cover, or with the factory part for a subtler engine bay.

Description

Spoon Sports Carbon Plug Cover for FL5 / FK8 Honda Civic Type R

The Spoon Sports Carbon Plug Cover for FL5 / FK8 Civic Type R is the part that restarted a Spoon tradition. A yellow head cover topped with a Kevlar plug cover was a fixture of Spoon engine bays for years, until the company could no longer secure a factory to make the plug covers and production stopped. The revival came from an unexpected place: the molding method Spoon adopted for its FK8 intake duct proved suited to the cover, and this K20C turbo version was the first to be released, with B-series, F-series and K20A covers planned after it. The weight change is dramatic, as Spoon lists the prepreg carbon and Kevlar cover at 85 g against 700 g for the standard part. On a turbo Type R the gain is about looks and lightness above the engine rather than lap time, and it pairs naturally with a Spoon red or yellow head cover.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
