Who benefits most from the Front Stiff Plate for FL5?

Owners who have raised the grip level or the power of the car. Spoon found the response delay and slight instability appear when tires and engine output go beyond stock, and the Front Stiff Plate for FL5 was developed to remove exactly that. A standard car feels a smaller but still noticeable gain in steering precision.

Does it fit the new Prelude?

Yes. Spoon registers the plate for the BF1 Prelude with the 2.0L e:HEV hybrid powertrain alongside the FL1 and FL5 Civic, and Go Tuning lists the Prelude too. The Prelude uses the 11th generation Civic front structure, so the plate mounts to the same subframe points.

Is any cutting or drilling required?

No. The plate bolts to existing mounting points under the front of the car and the factory under panels fit back over it. Spoon publishes an instruction manual for the job, and most shops with a lift can complete it quickly, though there is no reason a careful home mechanic could not do it.

How much weight does it add?

Spoon does not publish a weight for this version. What Spoon does say is that the high-tensile steel and the surface layout were chosen to gain stiffness without adding excessive mass, which matches its view that a good body must be rigid and light at the same time.

Can it be combined with other Spoon body parts?

Yes. The plate addresses the front subframe joint, while the Spoon Motion Control Beam works on twist at the front and rear extremities of the body and the Spoon Floor Brace Bar stiffens the floor under the seats. Each targets a different area, so they work together rather than overlapping.

Description

Spoon Sports Front Stiff Plate for FL5 Honda Civic Type R, FL1 / FE1 Civic and BF1 Prelude

The Spoon Sports Front Stiff Plate for FL5 Honda Civic Type R answers a small weakness Spoon found only after pushing the car further than Honda intended. The FL body is optimised in structure and material and handles superbly as delivered, yet with grippier tires and more power Spoon noticed a slight delay in response and a loss of stability. Testing traced it to the joint between the front subframe and the body under the floor. Spoon reinforced that joint with a high-tensile steel plate that connects many mounting points across a surface rather than at single points, adding stiffness for very little weight. It bolts on without drilling, and the factory under panels go back on. Fit it if the car runs sticky tires or a tune; on a stock FL1 commuting on all-seasons it is a refinement, not a transformation.

Design and Development

Spoon defines a good chassis as one that is both rigid and light, arguing that a strong engine, good suspension and high-grip tires deliver only half their value on a body that cannot support them. That is why the plate is made from high-tensile steel and kept compact. The same part is registered for the BF1 Prelude, which shares the 11th generation Civic front structure.

Features

Reinforces the front subframe to body joint beneath the floor
Connects mounting points across a plane rather than at single points
High-tensile steel keeps the added weight small
Bolt-on with no drilling or cutting
Factory under panels refit over the plate

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
