Is the Carbon Bonnet for EK4 Late Model right for my car?

Yes, if the car was built from September 1998 onward. Spoon registers the late Carbon Bonnet for EK4 and EK9 for the SiR and Type R made from then until September 2000, and Go Tuning lists it for 1999 and 2000 model year Civics. Cars built earlier take the separate early bonnet.

What weight does it save?

Spoon lists 8.2 kg for the carbon bonnet and 15.5 kg for the factory one, so 7.3 kg leaves the front of the car. On a Civic with the engine and gearbox up front, that trims the weight bias toward the nose, which Spoon credits with less understeer and lighter work for the brakes.

No. Go Tuning explains that the construction is sturdy and the latch points are molded in, so the bonnet secures on the factory catch without pins. That keeps the front of the car looking clean, though the rules of a timed competition can still require a secondary restraint on any hood.

How should the carbon be protected?

Clear coat it. Spoon notes that carbon may discolor under ultraviolet light and recommends a UV-protective clear. Trial fit the bonnet before the clear goes on, avoid any booth heater or spot heat that could warp it, and in cold or humid weather keep the drying temperature under 40 degrees Celsius.

Is it worth fitting to a road driven Civic?

Yes, for an owner who drives with enthusiasm. A lighter nose makes the car turn in more readily on a good road as well as a circuit, and the bonnet works like the original day to day. It is less compelling for a commuter, where the cost and clear coat care outweigh a gain that is rarely used.

Description

Spoon Sports Carbon Bonnet for EK4 / EK9 Honda Civic Late Model

The Spoon Sports Carbon Bonnet for EK4 and EK9 Honda Civic Late Model fits the cars Honda built from September 1998 to September 2000, the final run of the B16A SiR and the B16B Type R, and Spoon makes it separately from its early EK bonnet so the shape matches. Carbon gives it the stiffness to close on the factory latch without bonnet pins while weighing a little over half as much as the original: Spoon lists 8.2 kg against 15.5 kg. Spoon compares that to a car built without air conditioning, and it comes from the one place a front-drive Civic most wants to lose weight. Go Tuning, which distributes Spoon in the US, sells this version for 1999 and 2000 model year cars. The black weave is left exposed. Choose it for an EK that sees track time; an owner preserving a factory-original car may prefer the steel part.

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
