In fact Lotus built it at Hethel on its own version of the S2 Elise chassis, with a longer wheelbase and very few parts shared with the Elise. That means its suspension needs to be developed for the VX220 itself. The Nitron VX220 NTR-R1 FastRoad kit is built specifically for the car. Its hand-built coilovers are sprung and valved for owners who drive their VX220 hard on back roads and take it to an occasional track day. Over the years the original dampers have worn out. The car wallows over crests, thumps through potholes and loses composure when a corner tightens mid-bend. The Nitron VX220 NTR-R1 restores proper control and keeps enough compliance for long drives on uneven roads. A single adjuster at each corner sets bump and rebound together. You can firm up the setup for a smooth, fast road or soften it for broken pavement in a few seconds. Mounting brackets come with the kit, supplied for your car’s drive side.

Unique Technology

The NTR-R1 comes out of Nitron’s racing work, and the Nitron VX220 NTR-R1 shares much of its internal hardware with the NTR-R3 that Nitron races internationally. Each damper’s gas charge sits inside the body. Nothing mounts remotely, and installation is a straightforward swap at each corner. The dampers run inverted, which takes weight off the wheel side and helps the tires follow the road surface instead of skipping over it. Friction inside the Nitron VX220 NTR-R1 is kept very low, so the damper begins working the instant the wheel moves. That quick response holds the VX220 steady through a dip in the middle of a fast corner. It also smooths out the sharp jolts from broken pavement before they reach the cabin. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer.
