Background

• Earlier Porsche 911 models housed their intercoolers inside each rear fender, with a Y-pipe connecting them before directing the charge air to the intake manifold. The 992, however, features an entirely new setup, combining the intercooler and Y-pipe into a single unit located beneath the rear wing. Ambient air flows from channels by the rear window into a scoop on the decklid, then through the intercooler core for optimal heat transfer. This configuration is logical from a side view but presents additional challenges for a performance cooling manufacturer. To accommodate a larger core with greater volume and surface area, do88 developed new carbon ducts, allowing for increased thickness. The carbon production for this product reaches a new level, ensuring fitment and finish suitable for the iconic 911.

Garrett Cores

• The do88 kit utilizes Garrett Motorsport Bar & Plate cores, known for their superior quality. These cores have thin, stacked cooling fins that create a dense construction for efficient heat transfer. Measuring 105 mm (4”) thick, the core is designed to maximize space in this application. Free-form cast end tanks distribute air across the entire core, a design refined through 3D scanning, CFD analysis, and repeated 3D printing. Cast end tanks allow for shapes that CNC machining can’t replicate, prioritizing maximum airflow over aesthetics. The tanks also feature 70 mm (2.75”) machined connections to support high outputs, with included silicone hoses for compatibility. Both cores are joined by a central outlet tank that leads to the intake manifold, using machined connections and meth bungs.

Carbon Ambient Air Guides

• The air guides are crafted from vacuum-infused, prepreg carbon, with fastening grooves for air channels, just like the original components. Complex in shape yet precisely designed, these guides include rubber seals where needed to prevent cooling air from bypassing the core, ensuring maximum cooling efficiency.

Performance

• The do88 intercoolers deliver a substantial reduction in intake temperatures. Data collected with an AIM race logger on a closed airstrip shows the difference in intake temps compared to the OE 992 units. In a series of full-throttle accelerations from 50-250 km/h (30-155 mph) with a Porsche 911 Turbo S (757 hp, with software and exhaust upgrades), the do88 intercoolers consistently outperformed the originals, lowering peak intake temps by 12°C (21.6°F).

Testing

• Testing involved four runs with the original 992 intercoolers, followed by a quick switch to the do88 intercoolers. After a brief shakedown, five more runs were conducted under identical conditions. The do88 intercoolers demonstrated significantly lower inlet air temperatures. After extensive refinement of the end tanks and core selection, the result is an intercooler that greatly improves both heat transfer and airflow. Verified on the Superflow SF-1020 Probench, the do88 intercoolers show reliable performance gains over the OE units, delivering genuine results.
