The Nitron BMW 1 Series NTR-R1 Coilover Kit is for the E8x owner who has found out how much more this car has to give once the suspension stops holding it back. The 1 Series is a compact, front-engine, rear-drive BMW with close to even weight distribution, struts up front and a multi-link rear, and it responds to better dampers more than almost any other upgrade. The factory units on cars that are now well over a decade old have lost most of their control, and the soft factory springs let the body roll and pitch long before the tires are near their limit, which shows up as slow turn-in, a floaty front end over crests, and a rear that feels disconnected under load. Nitron’s NTR-R1 Coilover Kit replaces all of that with firmer race springs, a damper with enough control to manage them, and adjustable top mounts, and it fits the E81, E82, and E87 across every model except the 1M, whether that’s a 120i or a twin-turbocharged 135i. The rear can be specified as either a coilover or a divorced setup, so the kit can be matched to how the car is built and how it’s going to be used, from a daily driver that sees the occasional back road to a car that spends weekends at track days.

Coilover or Divorced Rear Suspension

The factory E8x rear carries its spring and damper as separate components, and the Nitron NTR-R1 gives a choice of how to handle that. The divorced option keeps the spring and damper apart in their original locations, so the factory spring location and load path stay as BMW designed them. The coilover option mounts the spring directly around the damper in a single assembly, which is the more traditional layout and suits owners who prefer a conventional coilover at all four corners. Either way the front is a coilover unit at each strut, and the choice only changes how the rear is set up.

Each Nitron NTR-R1 damper is a monotube design pressurized with nitrogen gas, which keeps the oil from aerating and holds damping consistent as the dampers heat up over a long session. The valving was developed through motorsport work and then tuned to the weight and spring rates of an E8x rather than adapted from a generic BMW curve, with 2-way combined compression and rebound adjustment at each corner so the car can be dialed firmer or softer without pulling anything apart. The reservoir is internal, so there’s nothing remote to route.

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance.
