With this dual-purpose nature in mind, the exhaust system was carefully designed to meet specific sound and performance criteria. The objective was to craft an exhaust that delivers a comfortable and refined experience during cruising speeds, while also delivering a visceral and commanding sound that matches the raw power unleashed at high revs.

Cross Sections

• In order to attain an ideal equilibrium between torque and increased power, the cross sections within the exhaust system have been enlarged by approximately 10% compared to the stock configuration. This purposeful augmentation guarantees enhanced performance without compromising the optimal torque-to-power ratio.

The Sound

• Incorporating the customary advancements for which Kline is known, such as the precise x-pipe geometry that produces their renowned fiery roar, the exhaust system also incorporates a valvetronic mechanism. This innovative technology allows you to enjoy a serene and quiet driving experience during moments of cruising, while unleashing a captivating, high-pitched, and dynamically resonant vocalization when the valves open. When the valves are closed, the exhaust gases are redirected through a series of chambers and acoustic segments, effectively eliminating any noise or resonance within the cabin. However, when the valves open, the exhaust system seamlessly transitions into a completely unrestricted flow, optimizing both performance and sound. The gases exclusively pass through Kline’s distinctive x-pipe, expertly enhancing the exhaust note with a heightened pitch.

Performance

• By eliminating restrictions located in the silencer section and introducing a fully unrestricted flow system when the valves are open, the exhaust achieves peak efficiency. This modification not only optimizes the exhaust system’s performance but also leads to moderate improvements in power and torque output. 21hp and 27 nm power and torque gain.

Materials

• The Kline Innovation Audi R8 exhaust system is available in two material choices. Firstly, there is the 304 Stainless Steel variant, weighing approximately 19.5 kilograms. For those who prioritize weight reduction, there is also the option of the F1 Grade Inconel 625 version, weighing approximately 9.0 kilograms.
  • Stainless Steel:
    • 304-grade stainless steel has established itself as the prevailing industry standard for exhaust manufacturing. This type of stainless steel offers a balanced combination of moderate strength, thermochemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production. It allows for the construction of exhaust systems that are comparatively affordable while delivering a high level of functionality and durability. However, it’s worth noting that stainless steel is relatively heavy. While it shares a similar density to regular steel, it possesses reduced tensile strength. This limitation restricts the potential for building high-performance exhaust components using stainless steel. Additionally, in terms of sound characteristics, the thicker sidewalls required by stainless steel can result in a slightly lackluster and less vibrant exhaust note when compared to other materials mentioned earlier.
  • Inconel:
    • Inconel 625, renowned for its indispensability in the aerospace industry where durability and heat resistance are of paramount importance, finds widespread use in the manufacturing of critical components like exhaust turbine blades for high-performance jet engines. Notably, Inconel is also a preferred choice for Formula One exhaust systems and has been selected by manufacturers engaged in prestigious hypercar projects such as the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. These applications benefit from Inconel’s remarkable capability to withstand extreme temperatures surpassing 1000°C while prioritizing lightweight design.
    • Inconel exhibits exceptional properties, including exceptionally high tensile strength and remarkable thermochemical stability. Its tensile strength is comparable to that of titanium, offering an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. Consequently, Inconel allows for the use of thin sidewall materials while maintaining structural integrity, resulting in the production of lightweight components that are resistant to fatigue over time. Nevertheless, working with Inconel presents certain challenges due to its difficult machinability and welding requirements, necessitating specialized skills and time-consuming techniques. Moreover, the unique properties and specialized manufacturing processes of Inconel contribute to its higher cost as a raw material.
