Does the S-Tai 3rd-4th-5th Gear Set change the gear ratios?

Yes, but only slightly. Spoon lists third at 1.522 against 1.529 stock, fourth unchanged at 1.125 and fifth at 0.903 against 0.911. The S-Tai 3rd-4th-5th Gear Set was designed for strength, and the small ratio changes follow from the new tooth counts rather than any attempt to regear the car.

Why would an FL5 need stronger gears?

Most never will. Spoon developed the set after two transmission failures in the Fuji 24 Hours, where gears carry heavy load for hour after hour. Owners who run endurance events, long track sessions or time attack programs are the audience, while a road car or an occasional circuit day is unlikely to stress the factory gears to failure.

Can the main and counter gears be bought separately?

No. Spoon specifies that the main shaft and counter shaft gears are always used together, because each redesigned gear is cut to mesh with its new partner. The set is sold complete for third, fourth and fifth, so the builder installs matched pairs on both shafts in a single job.

How was the set proven?

On track. Spoon ran the gears in the last three races of the season that followed the Fuji failures and covered more than 3,500 km without replacing them. The following year the car completed the Fuji 24 Hours without a transmission problem, at a race pace Spoon describes as faster than in previous years.

Who should fit the gear set?

A specialist transmission builder. The job means removing and splitting the six-speed gearbox, pressing gears off both shafts and setting up bearings and synchronizers correctly on reassembly. Worn synchronizer rings or bearings are best renewed while the case is open.

Description

Spoon Sports S-Tai 3rd-4th-5th Gear Set for FL5 Honda Civic Type R

The Spoon Sports S-Tai 3rd-4th-5th Gear Set for FL5 Honda Civic Type R exists because Spoon lost a transmission twice in the Fuji 24 Hours and traced the weakness to the factory gears. Development began by cutting stock gears apart to study their hardness and composition. Spoon then changed the gear geometry itself, module, pressure angle, helix angle and tooth count, along with the material, the tooth profile and the manufacturing method, and reports roughly 30,000 times the bending fatigue life and about four times the pitting life of the factory parts. The gears then ran trouble-free through the next Fuji 24 Hours. Ratios stay within 0.01 of stock, so the car drives as Honda geared it. This set is for owners who run long sessions on track; a road car will never load the factory gears enough to justify the cost.

Third, fourth and fifth gears redesigned for endurance circuit use

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
