Why buy the LSD Differential Assembly for AP1 instead of the separate parts?

Because the setup is done. Spoon fits its 4.44 final gear and LSD into a new Honda differential, then adjusts, balances and checks the whole unit before it ships. Buying the LSD Differential Assembly for AP1 removes the need to find a shop that can set gear mesh and preload correctly, and the original differential stays intact as a spare.

How does the 4.44 ratio change the feel of the car?

Each gear is about 8 percent shorter than with the factory 4.10 final drive, so the car pulls harder in every ratio and reaches the top of each gear sooner. The flip side is higher engine speed at a steady highway cruise. On a track or a tight road the trade is easy to accept, while on long commutes it is noticeable.

Is the differential new or rebuilt?

Spoon builds it from a new genuine Honda differential assembly, not a used core. The Spoon final gear and Spoon LSD are fitted inside, and the unit is washed, measured and assembled to Spoon specification. That gives a fresh housing and bearings alongside the upgraded internals, which matters on a car that may be two decades old.

Does it fit a 2004 or 2005 US S2000?

No. Those cars carry the 2.2L F22C1, and Go Tuning, the sole US distributor for Spoon, assigns them to the AP2 version of this assembly. This AP1 unit is sold for 2000 to 2003 model year US cars, and Spoon registers it for JDM AP1 cars with the F20C built from 1999 to 2005.

How involved is installation?

It is a lift job for a shop that works on rear-drive cars. The factory differential comes out with the axles and propeller shaft disconnected, and the Spoon unit goes in as a complete assembly weighing a listed 33 kg. Refill with fresh differential fluid of the grade the installer recommends for a limited-slip unit.

Description

Spoon Sports LSD Differential Assembly for AP1 Honda S2000 with 4.44 Final Gear

The Spoon Sports LSD Differential Assembly for AP1 Honda S2000 arrives as a complete rear differential: a new genuine Honda unit that Spoon opens, fits with its own 4.44 final gear and limited-slip differential, then washes, measures, balances and closes up to its own specification. That last step is the reason to buy it whole. Setting gear mesh and bearing preload on a final drive is specialist work, and here it has already been done by Spoon technicians in Tokyo. Against the factory 4.10 ratio, the 4.44 gear is roughly 8 percent shorter, so every gear multiplies torque harder and the car pulls with more urgency out of slow corners, while the LSD puts that drive down evenly on the exit. At a listed 33 kg, it is aimed at an AP1 that sees regular circuit days; for a cruiser that rarely leaves the highway, the higher engine speed at a cruise will feel like a cost rather than a gain.

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
