If concerns arise regarding drone on a PDK-equipped car, this exhaust system is designed to alleviate such worries.

Numerous owners of the 991.1 Carrera have expressed dissatisfaction with the sound and performance delivered by their sport exhaust system, finding it lacking in impact. In response, Soul Performance set out to create an exhaust system that embodies a true Jekyll and Hyde personality, perfectly matching the Carrera’s persona. This car disguises its power behind an unassuming facade. The primary objective was to design a system that ensures a straight flow path for the exhaust gases when the valves are open. To achieve this, Soul Performance employed a larger tubing diameter, implemented smooth radius bends, and incorporated an X-pipe crossover with optimized flow characteristics. These enhancements significantly improve throttle response and overall performance compared to the restrictive factory sport exhaust, thanks to improved exhaust scavenging effects and increased volumetric efficiency.

Development & Testing

• The objective was to enhance the comfort of everyday driving without compromising the race-inspired tone and straight-through exhaust design. They determined that opting for a larger resonator would not achieve the desired results and would necessitate revisions to accommodate clearances. Such revisions could jeopardize the high-flow design principles of their exhaust system. Furthermore, incorporating higher flowing aftermarket headers, such as their Long Tube Street Headers, into an aggressive rear system without appropriate sound attenuating features could lead to an excessively loud and potentially unpleasant driving experience.
• It is crucial for customers who have combined an upgraded rear exhaust with headers to carefully consider this configuration and ensure that the exhaust system is engineered appropriately. To effectively mitigate unwanted frequencies, Helmholtz resonators (also referred to as anti-drone tubes) can be employed when they are engineered and utilized correctly. In the case of the 991.1 Carrera, an inherent RPM range between 3,000 and 3,500 exists, where the drone can become noticeable when higher flowing exhaust components are added. The objective was to eliminate these undesirable frequencies within that range, while also ensuring a smooth transition from closed to open valves for factory PSE-equipped cars.

Construction

• Every exhaust is meticulously crafted in-house using mandrel bent, thick-walled T304L stainless steel with a diameter of .065 inches. Following the fabrication process, rigorous quality checks are conducted to ensure impeccable standards. To ensure optimal weld penetration and longevity, the exhausts undergo back purged TIG welding, guaranteeing the highest quality of welds.

• The exhaust system produces an aggressive sound as one of its primary benefits. When the valves are open, there is a direct and unrestricted path from the 2.5″ piping to the tips, resulting in a bold and unimpeded flow. However, they have skillfully incorporated additional refinements into the system to match the premium experience that characterizes all things Porsche. The presence of an X-pipe further enhances sound smoothness when the valves are both open and closed. Overall, they are highly satisfied with the results and are confident that you will be too. When the valves are open, the system’s free-flowing nature creates a sound reminiscent of Cup cars, featuring increased volume and a pronounced crackling and burbling effect during deceleration. When the valves are closed, the tone remains reasonable and refined, effectively minimizing drone while still allowing the distinctive sound of the flat six engine to be heard.

• Installing the valve controller on non-PSE models is a more challenging process compared to PSE equipped vehicles.
