Kline Innovation Turboback Exhaust System for 997 Porsche 911 GT2

The GT2 represents the apex of the 997 range. The factory setup features a titanium rear silencer section. So, how could they make improvements? By merely upgrading the material to Formula One grade Inconel 625, eliminating the center chamber, incorporating their signature tight radius x pipe, and enhancing the catalyst section with 100cpsi HJS units or racing pipe sections for peak performance.

The Sound

• The factory setup generates a somewhat uninspiring sound, mainly due to a series of chambers, restrictive catalysts, and a notable lack of balance between opposing banks. By replacing the standard cats with either 100cpsi or racing pipes, the sound volume increases respectively. The replacement of the chambered transverse rear silencer with free-flow harmonically tuned silencers enriches the sound. Furthermore, the addition of their signature 1D CLR laminar flow X pipe elevates the exhaust pitch beyond the range where bass noise can infiltrate the cabin. Under hard throttle and high revs, a rich and raucous vocal ensues. This design was pioneered and innovated by Kline Innovation.

Performance

• Given that it’s a turbo car, the potential for performance enhancement through exhaust and software is significant. The most considerable gains with their racing version system are 42hp and 50lb/ft. In conjunction with software, they achieve 75hp and 74lb/ft.

Stainless Steel

• The 304-grade stainless steel is commonly used in the exhaust manufacturing industry due to its strength, thermal stability, cost-effectiveness, and fabricability. However, its weight and limited tensile strength can be drawbacks when it’s used in high-performance exhaust components. The requirement for thicker walls with stainless steel might also negatively impact the exhaust sound.

Inconel

• Inconel 625, known for its robustness and heat resistance, is frequently used to build critical components, such as high-performance jet engine exhaust turbine blades. It’s the chosen material for Formula One exhaust systems and high-profile hypercar projects like the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. While Inconel can withstand temperatures over 1000°C and promotes a lightweight design, it presents unique challenges due to its complex machinability and specialized welding requirements.

Carbon Fiber

• The carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, celebrated for its impressive strength-to-weight ratio, is highly sought after in sectors like automotive and aerospace. Its incorporation can result in weight reduction and increased rigidity, hence improving the overall performance of the vehicle.
