With the 997 turbo as Kline’s primary marque, they sought to integrate the same design innovations and perfect sound into the Gen II model. Upon examining the factory exhaust, they discovered substantial flaws across all areas of the design. Kline thus engineered the world’s first Gen II equal length manifolds, which significantly enhanced turbo spool, torque curves, and peak power, upholding their commitment to excellence in exhaust design, manufacture, and sound improvement.

The Sound

• The factory setup is known for producing a lackluster sound, primarily due to a series of chambers, 600 cell catalysts, and an apparent imbalance between opposing banks. It is strongly advised for any Porsche turbo owner considering an aftermarket exhaust to avoid options that lack gas balance between the left and right banks. Replacing the stock catalysts with either a 200cpsi, 100cpsi, or racing pipes option proportionately amplifies the sound. The replacement of the chambered transverse rear silencer with freeflow harmonically tuned silencers enriches the sound, while the incorporation of Kline’s trademark 1D CLR laminar flow X pipe elevates the exhaust pitch, preventing bass noise from entering the cabin. During hard throttle and high revs, this modification results in a rich and raucous vocal effect. Although Kline pioneered and innovated this design, several imitations have emerged.

Performance

• Being a turbocharged car, the scope for enhancing performance through exhaust and software is considerable. The racing system from Kline offers the most substantial gains of 42hp and 50lb/ft. When paired with software, the gains amount to 75hp and 74lb/ft. The addition of Kline’s equal-length manifolds improves the rate of turbo spool, leading to an extra 12lb/ft torque and 9hp.

Stainless Steel

• Though 304-grade stainless steel is a popular choice in the exhaust manufacturing industry due to its strength, thermal stability, affordability, and fabricability, its weight and limited tensile strength can be drawbacks when used in high-performance exhaust components. The need for thicker walls with stainless steel may also negatively impact the exhaust sound.

Inconel

• Inconel 625, acclaimed for its robustness and heat resistance, is often used in constructing essential components, such as high-performance jet engine exhaust turbine blades. It’s the preferred material for Formula One exhaust systems and esteemed hypercar projects like the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. Despite its ability to withstand temperatures over 1000°C and emphasis on lightweight design, Inconel presents unique challenges due to its intricate machinability and specialized welding requirements.

Carbon Fiber

• Carbon fiber reinforced polymer, renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, is in high demand in industries like automotive and aerospace. Its incorporation can lead to weight reduction and increased stiffness, thus enhancing the overall performance of the vehicle.
