HKS’s HIPERMAX S Coilover Kit for FL5 Honda Civic Type R is the version of the HIPERMAX S that HKS built specifically around a front pillow upper mount, and that single choice changes the character of the car. The spherical bearing gives the steering a directness a rubber mount cannot, and it opens up camber adjustment, so wider tyres and more negative camber become a way to kill understeer rather than a compromise. Underneath, Dual PVS valving, a Wide Range Needle and an Advanced Bump Rubber deliver what HKS calls the best ride quality in the history of its suspension, and a Suspension Error Canceller is included so the factory adaptive damper circuit stays quiet.

Design and Performance

The front is an inverted coilover on a spherical-bearing upper mount, the rear a separated damper and spring on a rubber mount with a height-adjustable lower bracket and remote damping adjustment by wire. Both ends carry 30 steps of damping and a helper spring, 19.8 N/mm at the front and 7.6 N/mm at the rear, which is what keeps the HIPERMAX S Coilover Kit for FL5 composed over broken surfaces instead of skipping. HKS sets the car 31mm lower than stock at the front and 22mm at the rear as delivered, with room to go to 44mm and 41mm respectively, all of it inside the range HKS confirms is free of body and arm contact.

Construction

Dual PVS valving separates low-speed and high-speed damping behaviour, the Wide Range Needle widens the useful span of the 30 clicks so the extremes remain usable, and the Advanced Bump Rubber manages the last of the stroke rather than slamming into it. Straight-wound springs measure 98 N/mm at the front and 78 N/mm at the rear on a common 170mm free height, and HKS will change rates at the factory, recommending up to 20 N/mm more at the front and 10 N/mm either way at the rear. The upper plate is gunmetal-anodised aluminium to match the rest of the HIPERMAX range.

The spherical bearing in the front upper mount is a consumable. HKS sells replacement bearings separately, and Bulletproof Automotive does not currently stock them, so plan on sourcing them from HKS when the time comes.
HKS quotes its ride-height figures from the road surface to the fender arch, measured on 265/30-19 tyres on 9.5J x 19 inset 60 wheels. Actual figures vary by car.
Running the lowest setting may not be road legal in every jurisdiction, and HKS voids the product warranty for damper oil leakage caused by ride heights set below its own figures
