HKS Black S-Type Oil Cooler Kit for FK8 Honda Civic Type R

HKS’s Black S-Type Oil Cooler Kit for FK8 Honda Civic Type R answers the limit owners meet first on a hot lap, which is oil temperature. HKS mounts a nine-row, 48mm S-Type core in the right front fender area, clear of the radiator, and feeds it through a dedicated aluminum air guide that sends fresh air straight into the matrix. A thermostat keeps oil out of the core until the engine is warm, so street driving is unaffected, and a floating mount with an insulator keeps oil pump pulsation out of the cabin. This is the black-hose revision of the kit, built with black mesh hose and black and silver swivel fittings that weigh less than the stainless steel mesh HKS used before, supplied preassembled so the angled ends can be clocked by hand as the lines are routed.

Development and Testing

HKS logged the kit at Fuji Speedway short course on 12 April 2018 in 22°C ambient air, running a standard FK8 against one fitted with the Oil Cooler Kit for FK8 over a sustained session. Oil temperature on the standard car climbed past 125°C and was still creeping upward at the end of the run; with the kit fitted it settled near 113°C and held there. Coolant temperature fell with it, from roughly 105°C to roughly 97°C, because pulling heat out of the oil takes load off the radiator as well.

Construction

The core is a nine-row S-Type unit, 48mm wide, packaged behind the bumper so the front of the car looks standard. Hoses are high pressure black mesh, terminated in black and silver swivel fittings that HKS supplies preassembled. The aluminum air guide is shaped to feed the core and to let air out cleanly behind it, which is what holds the temperature line flat over a long session rather than letting it drop away after one cool lap. An HKS oil filter and a filter mount with a PT1/8 sensor port complete the plumbing of the Oil Cooler Kit for FK8.
