Background

• Earlier versions of the Porsche 911 housed intercoolers inside the rear fenders, connected by a Y-pipe that directed charge air to the inlet manifold. The 992 introduces a completely new design, combining the intercooler and Y-pipe into a single unit positioned beneath the rear wing. Ambient air is channeled through ducts from the rear window, into a scoop on the decklid, and then through the intercooler core for efficient heat transfer. The active rear wing enhances the system’s efficiency by directing additional airflow when in its upright position. While this configuration improves functionality, it presents greater challenges for performance cooling manufacturers. To accommodate a larger core with increased volume and surface area, do88 developed carbon ducts to support the thicker design. The advanced carbon production process ensures a fit and finish worthy of the Porsche 911’s legacy.

Garrett Cores

• The intercooler cores are Bar & Plate models produced by Garrett Motorsport, renowned for their exceptional quality. Featuring thin, stacked cooling fins, the cores provide dense construction for highly efficient heat transfer. Measuring 105mm (4”) thick, the cores maximize available space for this application. Airflow is evenly distributed through freeform-designed cast end tanks, a result of extensive 3D scanning, CFD analysis, and iterative 3D prototyping. Cast end tanks allow for complex shapes that CNC machining cannot achieve, prioritizing maximum airflow over aesthetics. The tanks feature 70 mm (2.75”) machined connections to support high outputs and are paired with silicone hoses for optimal performance. Both cores are connected by a central outlet tank leading to the inlet manifold, equipped with machined connections and meth bungs.

Carbon Air Guides

• The air guides are constructed from vacuum-infused prepreg carbon and include fastening grooves for air channels, matching the functionality of OE components. Despite their complex shapes, the guides guarantee precise fitment. The upper air guides remain consistent across all models, while the lower guides are available in two versions: Standard or SportDesign. The SportDesign ducts improve air evacuation via a central outlet in the bumper and are preferred for performance, though do88 provides carbon ducts for both configurations. Rubber seals are integrated where necessary to prevent air leakage around the core, ensuring maximum cooling efficiency.

Performance

• The do88 intercoolers deliver a significant reduction in intake temperatures compared to OE 992 units. Data collected using an AIM race logger during five consecutive full-throttle runs (50-250 km/h or 30-155 mph) in a Porsche 911 Carrera S (450hp) on a closed airstrip show the superior performance of the do88 system. The runs were conducted without cooldown periods, and the rear wing remained in its upright position throughout testing.

Testing

• Testing began with five runs using the OE 992 intercoolers, followed by a quick swap to the do88 intercoolers and another five runs under identical conditions. The results revealed a peak temperature reduction of 9°C (16.2°F). Extensive development of the end tanks and core selection resulted in intercoolers that outperform the OE system in both heat transfer and airflow efficiency. Verified using the in-house Superflow SF-1020 Probench, the do88 intercoolers consistently deliver proven, reliable performance.
