The Civic Type R has consistently been recognized as one of the best performance vehicles for its value, and the new FL5 Civic Type R (CTR) continues that legacy. Despite occasional critiques of its FWD configuration, its capability on and off the track is undeniable. Sharing much of its core engineering, the Acura Integra Type S, the CTR’s twin, is equally impressive. While the FL5 CTR is a remarkably well-engineered vehicle straight from the factory, it does have its limitations. The stock cooling system performs adequately for spirited driving and daily commutes but can struggle under track conditions or when performance tuning is introduced. From simple flash tunes to full big-turbo builds, improved cooling becomes essential. To address these needs, CSF proudly introduces the High-Performance All-Aluminum Radiator for the 2023+ FL5 Civic Type R and DE5 Integra Type S, offering a robust cooling solution for enhanced performance and reliability.

Design and Engineering

• CSF has an extensive and proven history with Honda cooling systems, including the production of factory radiators for Honda Performance Development (HPD). CSF supplied the private-label HPD Race Radiator for the FK8 Civic Type R TCR and recently delivered a new system for the FL5. Leveraging the insights and expertise gained from developing the race radiator, CSF designed a High-Performance version tailored for broader availability. This new High-Performance radiator incorporates CSF’s latest 5mm fin cooling technology, which increases the heat transfer area by 20-25% compared to larger fin designs, delivering superior cooling performance for enthusiasts and racers alike.

CSF vs OEM

• The original OE radiator from Honda features a plastic tank with a single-row aluminum core, which, while durable and of good quality, is not ideal for high-horsepower builds or demanding driving conditions. Turbocharged engines, such as the K20C1, generate significant heat, making efficient cooling crucial for maintaining engine and component longevity. CSF’s FL5 Civic Type R / DE5 Integra Type S Radiator incorporates advanced design elements for superior performance. Utilizing the latest 5mm fin technology, the radiator significantly increases heat exchange surface area, enhancing cooling efficiency. Its larger 2-row, 42mm aluminum core boosts fluid capacity and heat dissipation capabilities. CSF’s exclusive B-tube technology provides approximately 15% greater heat transfer compared to standard oval welded tubes, while multi-louvered fins maximize airflow through the core for optimal performance. Testing shows the CSF radiator reduces engine coolant temperatures by 6-8% compared to the factory radiator. Constructed with TIG-welded, 100% all-aluminum materials, it offers increased strength, durability, and reliability under harsh driving conditions. Designed for a direct fit, it mounts in the factory location without the need for modifications or cutting, ensuring a seamless upgrade.
• Test Results:
  • CSF conducted testing on an FL5 Civic Type R tuned to 294 whp and equipped with an upgraded, larger front-mount intercooler. It was observed that the larger intercooler increases engine coolant temperatures by approximately 7% due to the additional airflow restriction over the radiator. Test results revealed that the CSF Radiator reduces engine coolant temperatures by 8°C compared to the OEM unit. This demonstrates the critical importance of a radiator upgrade for vehicles equipped with larger intercoolers.
