Is the Aluminum Radiator for FL5 a race part?

Yes. Spoon developed a 42 mm core prototype for its FL5 race car and confirmed its effect at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. After street testing, Spoon chose to sell the Aluminum Radiator for FL5 to the same racing specification, because the condenser in front of a road car restricts airflow enough to demand equal cooling.

Why does a street FL5 need race-level cooling?

On a road car the air conditioning condenser sits in front of the radiator and blocks much of the air that would otherwise reach it. Spoon found in testing that this leaves a street FL5 needing the same cooling capacity as its race car on a hot circuit day, so it offers only the one specification.

Do the factory hoses need modification?

Yes. Spoon and Go Tuning both state that the radiator-side ends of the factory hoses must be cut by 10 mm for a correct fit. It is a simple trim with a sharp blade, but measure carefully and cut square so the hose seats fully and the clamp holds evenly.

Do I need the Spoon thermostat?

Yes, Spoon specifies it. Spoon lists its thermostat 19301-FK8-000 for use with this radiator and notes that a thermostat change alone only slows the rise in temperature. Together, the thermostat and the 42 mm core are what hold the K20C at its ideal temperature on track. The thermostat is sold separately.

Does it keep the factory fan and sensors?

Yes. Go Tuning confirms the radiator installs directly with the factory cooling fan and sensors, so no wiring changes or new sensor adapters are needed. Inlet and outlet use ORB fittings, and the billet upper tank carries an engraved SPOON SPORTS logo that is visible with the hood open.

Description

Spoon Sports Aluminum Radiator for FL5 Honda Civic Type R

The Spoon Sports Aluminum Radiator for FL5 Civic Type R is the same radiator Spoon runs on its race car, offered without compromise for the street. The turbocharged K20C generates a great deal of heat, and on a circuit its coolant temperature climbs fast enough to make continuous laps difficult; a different thermostat or a lower fan switching point slows the rise, but holding the ideal temperature takes a better radiator. Spoon built a prototype with a 42 mm core and ran it in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, where it proved effective. Street testing then showed that the air conditioning condenser in front of the radiator blocks much of the airflow, so a road car needs the same capacity as the racer, and Spoon made the race part its catalogue part. It is aluminum with billet upper and lower tanks, and Spoon specifies its 19301-FK8-000 thermostat alongside it. For an FL5 that sees circuit days it is the first cooling part to buy.

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
