How do I know if my car needs the early Carbon Bonnet for EK9?

Go by the production date. Spoon makes the early Carbon Bonnet for EK9 and EK4 for cars built up to September 1998, and a separate late version for cars built from September 1998 to the end of production in 2000. Spoon registers each only for its own period, so check the build date before ordering.

How much lighter is it than the stock bonnet?

Spoon puts its EK carbon bonnet at 8.2 kg, compared with 15.5 kg for the factory part. That is a reduction of 7.3 kg at the very front of the car, which Spoon says has the same effect as a Civic built without an air conditioning system. Few single parts take that much from the nose.

Does the bonnet need pins to stay closed?

No. It uses the same latch arrangement as the factory bonnet, so it opens, closes and secures the way the original does, and the washer system keeps working. Anyone running the car in competition should still check whether the event requires secondary hood restraints, as some do for every entry.

Is the bonnet painted?

No. The carbon weave is left exposed. Because ultraviolet light can discolor carbon, Spoon advises a UV-protective clear coat, applied after a trial fit. Spoon also asks that the coating air dry without heat, and below 40 degrees Celsius in cold or humid conditions, to keep the panel from distorting.

What does a lighter bonnet do for an EK on track?

Spoon lists four effects for a front-heavy front-drive car: less understeer, quicker turn-in, reduced load on the brakes and better acceleration. On a short, tight circuit, where the car is braking and turning almost constantly, those small gains add up over a session and help the front tires last.

Description

Spoon Sports Carbon Bonnet for EK9 / EK4 Honda Civic Early Model

The Spoon Sports Carbon Bonnet for EK9 and EK4 Honda Civic Early Model is made for cars built before the September 1998 change to the late model: the B16B Type R from its August 1997 launch, and the B16A SiR II from September 1995. Spoon makes early and late EK bonnets separately, so the production date matters when ordering. The payoff is the same on both. Spoon quotes 8.2 kg against 15.5 kg for the factory EK bonnet and equates the saving to a car built without air conditioning. With less mass at the nose, a front-drive EK pushes less in slow corners, turns in more eagerly and asks less of its front brakes. Mounting uses the factory latch, no pins are needed, and the washers carry on working. Spoon leaves the black weave exposed. It is aimed at a Civic built for circuit days; an owner chasing originality will prefer to keep the factory bonnet.

Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
