Does the Complete L15C Engine for FK7 make more power than stock?

Spoon publishes no power figure for the build. Its case for the complete L15C engine for FK7 is smoothness: matching the moving parts so closely cuts the fine vibration that a stock engine carries, which Spoon says shows up in driving feel rather than on a power curve. Power gains on the FK7 come from tuning and turbo parts.

What does matching moving parts within 0.02 g achieve?

Each cylinder carries a piston, pin and connecting rod. When those assemblies weigh almost exactly the same, the crankshaft sees balanced forces at every rotation, so the engine vibrates less and climbs through the rev range more cleanly. Spoon holds the difference between cylinders to 0.02 g, far tighter than a production line normally works to.

Will it suit a US FK7 hatchback?

Go Tuning, the sole US distributor for Spoon, sells this engine for the US FK7, but Spoon builds it to the L15C specification of the Japanese car while US hatchbacks carry the L15B7. The two are closely related, yet sensors, calibration and ancillaries can differ, so a shop should confirm compatibility with the US engine computer before ordering.

Why does Spoon assemble its engines in a cleanroom?

The L15C pairs aluminium with steel, and the two metals expand at different rates as temperature changes. If parts are measured warm one day and cold the next, the clearances drift. Spoon keeps its assembly room at a controlled temperature through the year so every bearing and piston clearance is set under the same conditions.

How long does an order take?

Spoon builds every unit to order. It quotes about a month for the build itself, before international freight to the US, so most owners should plan on a longer wait in total. BA confirms current timing with Go Tuning when the order is placed.

Description

Spoon Sports Complete L15C Engine for FK7 Honda Civic

The Spoon Sports Complete L15C Engine for FK7 Honda Civic is a new 1.5-litre turbo engine that Spoon assembles by hand in Tokyo from brand new Honda parts, then finishes to a standard Honda does not apply on its own production line. Spoon knows this engine well: it partnered with Hondata on the FK7, and its demonstration hatchback beat the lap time of a standard FK8 Type R at a time attack event. Each build has its piston, pin and rod sets matched within 0.02 g per cylinder. The result is a replacement engine that should feel smoother and rev more freely than a stock unit. It makes most sense for an FK7 needing an engine anyway, or for a build that will be pushed hard; as a first modification on a healthy car it is hard to justify.

How Spoon Builds It

Spoon deburrs every edge of the block and head, removing stress points and casting debris. The L15C mixes steel sleeves cast into an aluminium block, aluminium pistons and a steel crankshaft, camshafts and valves. Because these metals expand at different rates, Spoon assembles in a temperature-controlled cleanroom so clearances are set with the parts at a constant temperature all year.

Features

Assembled entirely from brand new Honda parts
Block and head edges deburred before assembly
Pistons, pins and rods matched within 0.02 g per cylinder
Cleanroom assembly for consistent clearances
Built to order by Spoon engine builders in Tokyo

Applications

Honda Civic Hatchback: FK7 | 2017-2021 | 1.5L L15C turbo

Notes

Spoon builds this engine to the L15C specification of the JDM FK7; US FK7 cars carry the L15B7 version, which Spoon does not name
Each Complete L15C Engine for FK7 is built to order, and Spoon quotes about one month from order
Spoon publishes no itemised list of ancillaries, so confirm with BA exactly what is attached before ordering
Professional installation is strongly advised

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, unfortunately our website is unable to compensate dynamically for what can at times be volatile changes in the cost of items due to currency values fluctuating, changes in prices from suppliers, changes in shipping and import duties, and other factors. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. We will continue to do our best to maintain updated prices and we will always continue to offer our price match guarantees as well to ensure our prices are always the best for you. In short, prices may change without notice. It is always advised to give us a call prior to placing your order online to confirm availability and to confirm current pricing.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
