Why replace the factory helical differential with the LSD Kit for FL5?

Because the helical unit is a compromise. Honda tuned it to balance sport and comfort, and Spoon found it short of locking for hard circuit driving. The LSD Kit for FL5 is a mechanical 1.5-way unit with preload, so it keeps the inside front tire pulling when load comes off it on corner exit.

Does it fit the FK8 and FK2 as well?

Yes. Spoon registers one kit for the FL5, the FK8 and the FK2 Civic Type R, all with the turbocharged K20C engine and a six-speed manual. FK8 cars from 2017 to 2021 and FL5 cars from 2023 on are covered, and the FK2 entry covers the version sold in Japan.

Is it noisy on the street?

Less than older mechanical designs. Spoon uses clutch plates selected to reduce chattering, so the unit is more comfortable in daily use than a conventional plate-type differential. Some drag and noise in tight, slow turns can still occur and are normal for a mechanical limited-slip unit.

What settings does Spoon use?

Spoon specifies 1.5-way locking with cam angles of 50 degrees under acceleration and 20 degrees on deceleration, and an initial torque of 5.0 to 6.0 kgf-m. Those values came from repeated driving tests in different conditions on the Type R, and the side bearings needed for fitting arrive with the unit.

Who should install it?

A drivetrain specialist. The six-speed gearbox must be removed and split, the factory differential replaced with the Spoon unit and the bearing preload and backlash set correctly. On an FL5 it is a natural time to fit the Spoon S-Tai gear set as well, since both jobs open the same transmission.

Description

Spoon Sports LSD Kit for FL5 / FK8 / FK2 Honda Civic Type R

Spoon Sports’ LSD Kit for FL5, FK8 and FK2 Civic Type R replaces the factory helical differential with a mechanical 1.5-way unit, a step Spoon takes because the Honda part is tuned to balance sport and comfort and runs short of locking when the car is driven hard. Repeated testing across a range of driving conditions settled the specification: cam angles of 50 degrees on the drive side and 20 degrees on the coast side, and initial torque of 5.0 to 6.0 kgf-m. A helical unit relies on load at both wheels to bias torque, while a plate-type differential carries preload, so it keeps working when an inside tire goes light over a curb or under trail braking. Spoon also fitted clutch plates chosen to reduce chatter, giving more day-to-day comfort than conventional mechanical units, and the side bearings come in the box. For a Type R used for time attack or frequent track days, it lets the car carry more throttle out of tight corners; on a road car the factory differential already does the job well.

Features

Mechanical 1.5-way locking with preload
Replaces the factory helical differential
Low-chatter clutch plates for street comfort
Specification settled through repeated real-world testing
Side bearings supplied

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
