HKS’s R Type Intercooler Core for FL5 Honda Civic Type R is the core on its own, and HKS designed it that way on purpose: it bolts up to the factory intercooler piping, so the biggest single cooling gain available on this chassis can be had in about ninety minutes. The core measures 695 x 178 x 100mm against the factory 639 x 158 x 64mm, which is 22.4 percent more area, and the resin end tanks give way to cast aluminium. HKS recorded charge temperature at the outlet of 30.3 degrees at 7000rpm where the factory core returned 56.0 degrees, lifting cooling efficiency from 67 to 88 percent.

Design and Performance

Ten fins and nine tubes in a deeper core, rather than the factory eleven and ten in a shallower one, is a deliberate trade of tube count for volume and flow. What it buys is a charge arriving roughly 25 degrees cooler at high rpm, which is the difference between an ECU that holds timing through a session and one that starts pulling it on the second lap.
