The S2000 That Never Left Bulletproof Automotive

The S2000 That Never Left Bulletproof Automotive

The Bulletproof Automotive S2000 has always been more than a shop car, but its appearance at SEMA 2025 feels especially significant. This is the same Honda S2000 that helped launch Bulletproof Automotive a quarter-century ago, back when the company’s roots were firmly planted in Japanese performance tuning. While Bulletproof Automotive now operates across an enormous spectrum, from hypercars and GT-Rs to Teslas, race-winning EVs, and even outfitting police fleets with Cybertrucks, this S2000 remains the constant thread connecting past to present.

Originally built during the golden era of late-1990s and early-2000s Japanese tuning culture, the car has evolved through multiple phases while retaining its core identity. Manual transmission, sky-high revs, and a purist driver-focused layout remain central to the experience. For SEMA 2025, the car debuted in its latest and most dramatic form yet, wearing a brand-new Varis widebody kit developed specifically for the S2000 platform.

A Varis Widebody Decades In The Making

The S2000 market has never been the obvious choice for widebody development. It has always been a niche platform, fiercely protected by purists who value originality and restraint. That reality makes Varis’ decision to release a completely new S2000 widebody over 25 years after the car’s debut all the more notable. Bulletproof Automotive has worked closely with Varis for decades as a distributor, and those long-standing conversations helped bring this project to life.

The kit shown at SEMA is the Varis’ Dark Panther widebody, engineered with function as the priority. Varis has long been known for developing aerodynamic components that produce genuine downforce rather than purely visual exaggeration, and that philosophy is carried through every panel on this S2000. From the front diffuser to the rear wing, each element is shaped with airflow management in mind.

The carbon fiber itself stands out. The checkerboard-style 12K spread tow weave used on this car is typically reserved for Varis demo builds and is rarely offered to the public. It is slightly thicker than conventional carbon, improving durability while giving the surface a distinct visual depth. Up front, the diffuser is paired with a sacrificial fiberglass lip, designed to withstand abuse without compromising the primary carbon structure. Optional block-off plates sit behind the front aero openings, allowing the owner to reduce drag or open them up for ducting if cooling demands change.

Widebody Engineering With Purpose

The front fenders demonstrate how modular the Varis system is. Varis offers a standard wide fender that adds approximately 15–20 millimeters per side, which can then be expanded further using an additional overfender section. On this car, both elements were molded together to create a seamless 45-millimeter increase in width. Integrated vents on the top and rear of the fenders manage heat extraction and contribute to front-end downforce.

Matching widebody components extend to the rear quarters, again pushing the body outward by roughly 45 millimeters. Achieving usable clearance required cutting beneath the factory metal panels to allow full suspension travel and tire clearance. The result is a properly functional widebody rather than a cosmetic overlay.

Side skirts vary depending on the chosen width configuration, and this build uses the wider version designed specifically for the full Dark Panther setup. Carbon mirrors from Evasive Motorsports, constructed from carbon magnesium, complement the aggressive bodywork while keeping weight in check.

Old-School Power With Modern Refinement

Under the hood, the Bulletproof Automotive S2000 retains its roots just as strongly as its exterior. Much of the engine hardware dates back more than two decades, including the supercharger originally installed in 2002. Rebuilt and retuned for modern standards, the setup now produces approximately 580 wheel horsepower at 9,300 rpm from a built engine running 11:1 compression.

The character remains unmistakably S2000: high RPM, relentless pull, and a soundtrack that builds rather than explodes. Plans include individual throttle bodies and a carbon plenum, with hood clearance being the only reason they were not completed in time for SEMA. The target is to exceed 600 horsepower while preserving the engine’s rev-happy nature.

Suspension components span generations as well. Top Secret–tuned Aragosta coilovers from the car’s 2006 configuration remain in place, complete with front and rear axle lift controlled remotely. An ASM Drexler differential rounds out the drivetrain, ensuring the power is delivered effectively.

Brakes, Wheels, And Thoughtful Details

For SEMA 2025, braking duties were upgraded to Brembo Pista components. The rear setup required a unique solution, pairing the Pista calipers with a separate parking brake caliper. According to Brembo, this marked the first dual-caliper Pista rear configuration of its kind. Evasive Motorsports assisted with custom lines to complete the system, resulting in a clean, functional solution suitable for both street and track use.

The wheels debut a Bulletproof Automotive design derived from the brand’s Road Warrior wheel, originally developed for EV applications. The forged wheels feature an algorithmically generated surface texture inspired by Japanese hammered metal techniques, known as tsuchime. Beyond aesthetics, the pattern influences light reflection and may offer subtle aerodynamic benefits, similar to a golf ball’s dimpled surface. Integrated, replaceable curb guards are hidden within the rim edge, allowing damage protection without compromising appearance.

Wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888R tires, the setup runs a square 295-section width front and rear, delivering serious grip to match the widebody stance.

A Rolling Timeline Of Bulletproof Automotive

Inside, the car balances preservation and refinement. Limited-edition Recaro Super Stark seats from 2006 remain, joined by a Mugen roll bar, a classic C’s short shifter, and a Keys Racing steering wheel. The Spoon hardtop has been on the car since 2006, modified by Bulletproof Automotive to include side windows for improved visibility. The interior of the hardtop is now fully trimmed in Alcantara, giving it a more OEM-like finish while retaining its aerodynamic advantages.

This S2000 has lived an unusually full life. It has appeared at three SEMA shows and featured briefly in both the first and fourth Fast and Furious films, including a memorable moment where Vin Diesel’s character slams an opponent onto the hood. Each iteration added another chapter to the car’s story, making its SEMA 2025 return feel less like a build debut and more like a reunion.

For Bulletproof Automotive, the S2000 represents the foundation. Before hypercars, EV race programs, and global projects, there was this car. Revisiting it at SEMA 2025 was not about chasing trends or nostalgia for its own sake; it was about acknowledging where everything began and celebrating the platform that helped shape an entire company.
