Which Boxster does the Spec Race Exhaust System fit?

The Spec Race Exhaust System fits the 986 Porsche Boxster Base with the 5-speed manual transmission, model years 1997 to 2004, with the 2.5 and 2.7 liter flat-six. It does not fit the Boxster S, the 6-speed manual, or Tiptronic cars, because the brackets mount to the 5-speed transmission.

How much weight does it save?

The system weighs 14.7 pounds, against 39.5 pounds for the factory system, a reduction of 24.8 pounds. On a mid-engined spec car that saving sits low and at the rear, where drivers notice it most, which is much of why teams choose the Spec Race Exhaust System.

Is it legal for the street?

No. It is built for closed-course competition and is not CARB certified, so it is not intended for emissions-controlled vehicles on public roads. Owners who fit it to a street-registered car should also expect a check engine light. Treat it as a race-only system.

What is the SOUL Spec Race Exhaust System made from?

It is built in-house from 2 inch, 0.065 inch wall, mandrel-bent T304L stainless steel, with laser-cut adjustable brackets and back-purged welds at the header flanges. The joints are clamped rather than welded, so sections can be serviced or replaced individually after contact damage on track.

Why are there no resonators?

SOUL leaves out resonators and other sound-attenuating pieces because PCA Club Races are generally not run on sound-restricted days, and the straight-pipe layout keeps exhaust velocity high and weight down. The system is loud by design; owners wanting a quieter car should look at a street-oriented exhaust instead.

Most teams install the system with ordinary hand tools, and SOUL includes a step-by-step install guide. The adjustable transmission-mounted brackets let you set clearance precisely, and the clamped joints make future service straightforward. A qualified technician is recommended to confirm fitment and clearances.

Description

SOUL Performance Spec Race Exhaust System for 986 Porsche Boxster (with 5-speed manual transmission)

SOUL Performance’s Spec Race Exhaust System for the 986 Porsche Boxster is built for one job: to survive a season of PCA Club Racing while taking weight off the back of a spec car that counts every pound. Developed in-house in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania with racing partner Brandywine Motorwerks, it trades the heavy factory system for 2 inch mandrel-bent T304L stainless straight pipes that drop the car’s exhaust weight from 39.5 pounds to 14.7, a saving of nearly 25 pounds exactly where a mid-engined car wants it gone. The engineering is race-shop pragmatic throughout: adjustable brackets that bolt to the transmission rather than the body and ride on silicone dampers, so the system moves with the drivetrain and spares the factory headers the resonance that cracks them, and clamped joints rather than welded ones, so a rear section damaged in contact can be swapped without cutting the car apart. This is a closed-course competition system for the 5-speed manual Boxster, made by a shop that races what it builds.

Development

SOUL built the system with Brandywine Motorwerks and the teams actually running 986 Spec Boxsters, and the design shows it. The brackets are adjustable and mount to the transmission instead of the chassis, riding on silicone dampers so the exhaust moves with the drivetrain rather than fighting it; that movement is what spares the factory headers the hard resonance that leads to cracking over a racing season. Resonators and other sound-attenuating pieces are left out on purpose, since PCA Club Races are not run on sound-restricted days, and the result is a straight-pipe system tuned for velocity and durability rather than quiet.

Construction

Each system is built in-house by SOUL Performance fabrication team using mandrel-bent 0.065-inch wall, 2-inch diameter T304L stainless steel tubing and laser-cut brackets. Every weld is back-purged to maximize strength and longevity under the most extreme conditions.

Bolt On and Go

Every system is fixture-tested for fitment, quality-checked, and foam packed before it ships, and it arrives with new high-grade hardware and the adjustable brackets and dampers ready to install. The clamped joints are meant to be serviced: nothing that wears or takes contact damage is welded in, so a bent rear pipe is a parts swap rather than a fabrication job. SOUL provides a step-by-step install guide, and most teams fit the system with ordinary hand tools.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, unfortunately our website is unable to compensate dynamically for what can at times be volatile changes in the cost of items due to currency values fluctuating, changes in prices from suppliers, changes in shipping and import duties, and other factors. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. We will continue to do our best to maintain updated prices and we will always continue to offer our price match guarantees as well to ensure our prices are always the best for you. In short, prices may change without notice. It is always advised to give us a call prior to placing your order online to confirm availability and to confirm current pricing.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
