The Porsche Cayman 718 GT4, often held in high regard as the apex of track-oriented machines, possesses a 414 hp flat 6 engine which, given its power-to-weight ratio, can generate incredibly quick lap times. However, the question arises: How can this already impressive vehicle be enhanced further? The answer lies in shedding excess weight, tuning the audio, and enhancing performance.

The Sound

• Eliminating the bulky, chambered rear silencer and replacing it with an F1-grade Inconel 625 X pipe, along with fully bypassable lightweight Inconel silencers, results in a significant weight reduction. This alteration also causes the exhaust’s pitch to rise, bringing it into an exotic tone range. Introducing HJS motorsport catalysts or racing pipes greatly improves the sound, complementing and emphasizing the high-pitched silencer section, which results in an intense and exotic roar. With the Kline innovation rear valvetronic setup, the car can maintain a stealthy approach with the valves closed. But with the valves open, an unfiltered, raw sound is achieved. The addition of meticulously crafted F1-grade Pre Preg carbon fiber exhaust tips perfectly complements the exhaust.

Performance

• The substitution of the OPF with a specially crafted silencer eliminates the most restrictive component, avoiding the drone typically associated with OPF removal. Replacing the stock catalysts with 100 cell HJS motorsport catalysts, or racing pipes, and adjusting the subsequent A/F ratios could result in an increase of up to 20 hp.

Stainless Steel

• 304-grade stainless steel is a preferred choice in exhaust manufacturing due to its durability, thermal stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. However, its substantial weight and limited tensile strength can become obstacles when applied to high-performance exhaust components. Moreover, the necessity for thicker walls could negatively impact the exhaust’s sound.

Inconel

• Contrarily, Inconel 625 is recognized for its resilience and heat resistance. It is frequently used in constructing critical parts, such as high-performance jet engine exhaust turbine blades. It’s the preferred material for Formula One exhaust systems and prestigious hypercar projects, including the likes of the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. Despite Inconel’s capability to endure temperatures above 1000°C and its emphasis on lightweight design, it comes with its own challenges due to its complex machinability and specialized welding requirements.

Carbon Fiber

• Lastly, the use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer is appreciated for its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio. It is sought after in industries such as automotive and aerospace. When incorporated, it leads to weight reduction and enhanced stiffness, substantially improving the vehicle’s overall performance.
