The RS5, featuring a powerful 2.9-liter V6 biturbo engine that produces 444hp, showcases the excellence of modern engineering. Like all turbocharged engines, there is significant potential to enhance the sound and power response through exhaust tuning.

The Innovation

• The stock 600cpsi catalysts in the exhaust system can be replaced with high flow HJS cores or racing downpipes, resulting in a significant improvement in sound and turbo spool. This modification enhances power output, reduces spool time, and allows the engine to reach its maximum potential. The exhaust system features twin 70mm dual oversized downpipes, an 89mm oversized center section, and a flow-optimized pipe that eliminates compressions. Additionally, an aluminum cross member is included to accommodate the oversized center pipe.
• For the rear silencer section, a set of lightweight valvetronic rear silencers has been designed to work with the car’s stock electronic actuated valve system. When the valves are open, the exhaust system provides a completely unrestricted flow, maximizing performance and producing an aggressive sound. When the valves are closed, the exhaust gases are redirected through a series of chambers and acoustic-filled sections, which are tuned to optimize low rpm torque and maintain a quiet volume during cruising.
• Completing the rear section are quad or oval carbon fiber tails, which are meticulously manufactured in-house using pre-preg F1 grade carbon fiber and feature inlaid branding.

Materials

• Stainless Steel:
  • 304-grade stainless steel has solidified its position as the prevailing industry standard for exhaust manufacturing. This specific grade of stainless steel offers a well-balanced combination of moderate strength, thermochemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production. It enables the construction of exhaust systems that are comparatively affordable while delivering a high level of functionality and durability. However, it is important to acknowledge that stainless steel is relatively heavier in comparison to other materials. While it shares a similar density to regular steel, it possesses a slightly lower tensile strength. This limitation restricts the potential for constructing high-performance exhaust components using stainless steel. Additionally, in terms of sound characteristics, the thicker sidewalls required by stainless steel may result in a slightly less vibrant and dynamic exhaust note when compared to the materials mentioned earlier.
• Inconel:
  • In the aerospace industry, Inconel 625 plays a vital role in ensuring durability and heat resistance. This exceptional material finds extensive applications in the production of critical components, including exhaust turbine blades for high-performance jet engines. Notably, Inconel is the preferred choice for Formula One exhaust systems and has been selected by manufacturers involved in prestigious hypercar projects such as the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. These applications greatly benefit from Inconel’s remarkable ability to withstand extreme temperatures exceeding 1000°C while prioritizing lightweight design.
  • Inconel exhibits exceptional properties, including remarkably high tensile strength and outstanding thermochemical stability. Its tensile strength is comparable to that of titanium, resulting in an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Consequently, Inconel allows for the use of thin sidewall materials while maintaining structural integrity, enabling the production of lightweight components that resist fatigue over time. However, working with Inconel presents certain challenges due to its difficult machinability and welding requirements, demanding specialized skills and time-consuming techniques. Additionally, the unique properties and specialized manufacturing processes associated with Inconel contribute to its higher cost as a raw material.
