How the DFV System Works

Öhlins’ Dual Flow Valve (DFV) technology handles the transition between road and race mode with a single adjustment. Turning the gold knob clockwise engages race mode across all four damping zones at once: low-speed compression, high-speed compression, low-speed rebound, and high-speed rebound. Reverse it and the damper returns to a more relaxed road setting. No tools, no separate adjustments per corner. On track, the DFV internals respond to surface changes fast enough to keep the M3’s rear-wheel-drive balance in check, giving you more usable grip and a more predictable car at the limit. The E46 becomes easier to place through corners and more composed under hard braking. Back on the road, the system softens its response and absorbs imperfections without the harshness that typically comes with performance-oriented spring rates.

Suspension Specs and Construction

The front uses McPherson strut monotube upside-down technology, which positions the damper mass lower in the assembly to reduce unsprung weight and improve response. Lowering adjustment up front runs approximately 15 to 35mm with a 70N/mm spring rate, and the front retains the original BMW top mounts. The rear uses an aluminum monotube shock absorber with both a spring preload adjuster and a separate damper length adjuster, allowing ride height and spring load to be set independently. Rear lowering range is approximately 5 to 35mm with a 110N/mm spring rate, also using the original top mounts. The 1-way 25-click adjuster covers both compression and rebound across all four corners.

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance.
