TEIN’s Flex Z Coilovers for AWD Tesla Model 3 and Model Y answer a familiar complaint about the dual-motor cars: a ride that feels sporty but knocks over broken pavement at city speeds. TEIN set these twin-tube dampers to soften that impact while keeping the car composed, and full-length bodies lower it by around an inch and a half. It is a road kit, priced well below TEIN’s FS2; an owner chasing lap times should look elsewhere.

Design and Performance

The twin-tube layout gives a long stroke and low friction, which is what lets a heavy electric car ride softly when lowered. Ride height is set by case length, so stroke and spring preload stay as TEIN designed them. Each damper has a 16-level knob; at the rear the Tesla body makes hand adjustment awkward, so TEIN recommends its EDFC controller for that end.

TEIN was founded in Yokohama, Japan, in 1985 by former rally mechanic Hakaru Ichino, joined soon after by driver Yoshio Fujimoto. The team reached the World Rally Championship in 1989, and in 1995 Fujimoto won the Safari Rally in a Toyota Celica GT-FOUR, the first Japanese driver to do so.
