T1 Race Development’s GT1R CNC Engine Oil Pan for R35 Nissan GT-R deals with two oiling problems the VR38DETT only reveals once it is pushed hard: windage above 7,500 rpm that whips air into the oil, and high-G acceleration that pulls oil away from the pickup. Either way the pump swallows air instead of oil, and an oil pump fed air is how engines are lost. A dry sump would solve both, but converting the VR38 is a large and expensive job, so T1 kept the factory wet sump layout and machined a deeper pan around a better-placed pickup.

Development and Testing

Development started in early 2015 with a run of sheet metal samples before the design moved to a CNC machined piece. Deepening the pan and optimising the pickup location added 1.5 quarts of capacity and put the pickup where it stays covered under hard acceleration. T1 logged oil pressure at high rpm before and after on two of its own cars.

Installation

The pan goes on with the engine still in the car. Only the first layer of the two-layer plastic underpanel is trimmed, so the lower layer still covers the pan, and the rear pan bolts, which sit close to the subframe, are easiest with a low-profile 1/4-inch drive swivel 10 mm socket.

About T1 Race Development

T1 Race Development was founded in Texas in 2005 by Tony Palo, whose 2000 Acura Integra GSR became the first eight-second front-wheel-drive street car before the shop turned its attention to the Nissan GT-R.
