Does the Turbulator for ZF1 need to be painted?

Yes. Spoon supplies the Turbulator for ZF1 in white gel coat, a base surface meant to be painted, and the black example in its photos was painted after manufacture. Most owners match it to the roof or choose a contrast color. A body shop should prepare the gel coat properly so the paint bonds and lasts.

How does a roof turbulator make the car more stable?

Spoon shaped the fin so the air passing over the roof stays in a turbulent boundary layer, which tends to cling to the surface more consistently than smooth flow that can break away at speed. Spoon describes the payoff as a body that is disturbed less by the air at high speed, which keeps the handling steady.

Is drilling required to install it?

No. The fin covers the shark fin antenna on the roof of the CR-Z and is held in place with double-sided tape, so the roof panel is left untouched. Clean and dry the roof well before fitting, and finish the paint first so the part goes on the car complete and fully cured.

Does it fit the US-market CR-Z?

Yes. Go Tuning, the sole US distributor for Spoon, sells this part for 2010 through 2016 model year CR-Z models, which takes in every US car from 2011 on. In Japan, Spoon registers both the early ZF1 and the facelifted ZF2, each with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

Is the turbulator worth fitting to a street car?

It depends on how the car is driven. Spoon says the benefit shows mainly at high speed and is greatest on a circuit. On a CR-Z used for commuting it works mostly as a styling piece, while on a car that runs regular track days it is an inexpensive aero step with a clear purpose.

Description

Spoon Sports Turbulator for ZF1 / ZF2 Honda CR-Z

The Spoon Sports Turbulator for ZF1 and ZF2 Honda CR-Z is a small roof-mounted aero device with an unusual job: it disturbs the air on purpose. Spoon designed its raised shape so that the flow across the roof stays in a turbulent boundary layer at all times, instead of shifting between smooth and separated flow as speed rises. The result Spoon is after is a body that the air pushes around less at high speed, so the car feels settled, and the company says the effect is strongest on a circuit. The piece weighs a listed 1 kg and fits over the factory shark fin antenna, held with double-sided tape, so the roof is never drilled. It suits a CR-Z that sees track days or long fast highway runs; on a car that rarely leaves town, it is mainly a styling detail with a racing reason behind it.

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
