Spoon Sports LSD Kit for FK7 / FL1 Honda Civic
A turbo-era Spoon differential with revised clutch plates that lock fast under low-rpm boost and chatter less in town
The Spoon Sports LSD Kit for FK7 and FL1 Civic hatchback is a newer Spoon differential, engineered around the way a small turbo engine delivers torque: early, from low rpm, and in quantity. That trait overwhelms an inside front tire in slow corners, so Spoon reworked the internal clutch plates, revising their material and surface treatment. By Spoon’s account the result is high initial torque and quick locking, with less of the chatter mechanical differentials make as they slip, which makes it easier to live with on the road than older designs. The 1.5-way unit uses cam angles of 50 degrees on the drive side and 20 degrees on the coast side, with initial torque of 5.0 to 6.0 kgf-m, and the side bearings come with it. For a six-speed hatchback that sees track days, or one carrying a tune and the Spoon clutch, it addresses the traction limit that appears first; an untuned car driven calmly will rarely reach it.
Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.
