Does the Super Lock LSD for R53 fit the R56 as well?

Yes. OS Giken lists the Super Lock LSD for R53 and R56 Cooper S cars, part number MN024-HA, for both the supercharged R53 and the turbocharged R56 with the six-speed manual gearbox. Automatic cars and models with other gearboxes are not covered by this part.

How does it change a front-drive MINI?

A MINI lifts its inside front wheel easily in tight corners, and an open differential then lets torque escape through it. With a clutch-type differential both front tires keep driving, so the car pulls out of corners harder and the stability system intervenes less.

What does 1.1-way mean?

A 1.1-way LSD locks strongly on acceleration and only lightly on deceleration. OS Giken uses this action on front-drive cars so turn-in and lift-off stay close to stock, while drive out of the corner gains the full locking effect. Steering stays natural.

Will it cause torque steer?

There will be some extra feedback through the wheel under hard acceleration, because both front wheels are driving. The low preload and progressive lock of the Super Lock keep this moderate, and most drivers prefer it to the wheelspin of an open differential.

Is it suitable for the John Cooper Works models?

Bulletproof Automotive recommends checking the gearbox. The part is listed for the six-speed manual R53 and R56 Cooper S, and JCW models built on those cars with the same gearbox use the same differential layout, but the gearbox should be confirmed before ordering.

Description

OS Giken Super Lock LSD for R53 / R56 MINI Cooper S 6MT

OS Giken’s Super Lock LSD for R53 / R56 MINI Cooper S 6MT fits the six-speed gearbox in the supercharged R53 and turbocharged R56 Cooper S, the change that lets a short-wheelbase front-driver put its power down out of tight bends. A MINI on stiff suspension lifts its inside front wheel readily, and with an open differential the torque escapes through that tire while the electronics cut power. OS Giken’s patented pressure ring keeps both front tires driving, and for front-drive cars its SPEC-S tune runs 1.1-way, so turn-in stays sharp. It suits a Cooper S used for autocross, track days or hill climbs.

Design and Performance

OS Giken carries the plates on splines that pass through the side gears, fitting up to twice as many as competing designs. That plate area allows a light preload for daily driving with smooth, progressive lock under power. The case is billet-machined and the gears are raw-forged and chemically heat treated.

Features

Clutch-type front differential for the Cooper S six-speed
1.1-way action on front-drive cars in the SPEC-S tune
Patented pressure ring for progressive lock
Up to twice the friction plates of competing designs
Light preload for a daily-driven car
Billet case and raw-forged gears

Applications

MINI Cooper S: R53 | 2002-2006 | 1.6L supercharged, six-speed manual
MINI Cooper S: R56 | 2007-2013 | 1.6L turbo, six-speed manual

Notes

The Super Lock LSD for R53 and R56 Cooper S cars is listed for six-speed manual cars only
Fitting requires removing and opening the gearbox; installation labor is not included

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
