Does the Super Lock LSD for ND fit the automatic MX-5?

No. The Super Lock LSD for ND roadsters, part number MZ191-HA, is listed for the six-speed manual car. The automatic ND has a different final drive, and OS Giken lists a separate unit, FT191-HA, for the automatic MX-5 and the Fiat 124 Spider.

OS Giken lists its Super Lock for the 2.0L PE-engined ND in Japan, including the RF body. In the US the 2.0L six-speed soft top and RF share the drivetrain, but Bulletproof Automotive recommends confirming fitment for a specific car before ordering.

What changes compared with the factory LSD?

The factory torque-sensing unit fitted to some trims biases torque only while both rear tires carry load. A clutch-type unit keeps transmitting torque when the inside rear unloads in a tight corner, so the car drives out of the corner rather than spinning a wheel.

Is it suitable for spec racing?

Check the series rules first. Some spec classes restrict differential changes, while open classes and track days allow them. Where permitted, the Super Lock is a common choice because OS Giken can retune it for the driver and the circuit.

Is it quiet enough for daily use?

Yes. OS Giken sets the Super Lock with a low preload that still reaches full lock progressively, and its Japanese catalogue describes the design as one of the quietest LSDs in city driving. Mild plate noise in very tight parking turns is normal for a clutch-type unit.

Description

OS Giken Super Lock LSD for ND Mazda MX-5 Miata 2.0L 6MT

OS Giken’s Super Lock LSD for ND Mazda MX-5 Miata 2.0L 6MT gives the fourth-generation roadster a clutch-type rear differential in place of the factory unit, for owners who have found the limit of what the standard differential will do on a tight autocross course. The ND weighs little and carries little load on its inside rear in a hairpin, so a torque-sensing or open differential lets that wheel spin as soon as the throttle opens. OS Giken’s patented pressure ring locks progressively instead. OS Giken’s Japanese catalogue lists the Super Lock for the 2.0-liter PE-engined ND; for an occasional canyon drive the factory unit is enough, but for timed events this is the upgrade.

Design and Performance

OS Giken carries the friction plates on splines running through the side gears, fitting up to twice as many plates as competing designs. That friction area lets the unit run a gentle preload on the street and still build smoothly to full lock on throttle. The case is cut from a single billet and the gears are raw-forged and chemically heat treated.

Features

Clutch-type rear differential for the 2.0L six-speed ND
Patented pressure ring for progressive lock-up
Up to twice the plate count of competing designs
Low preload suited to a road car
Billet case and raw-forged gears
Retunable by OS Giken for initial torque and lock timing

Applications

Mazda MX-5 Miata: ND | 2016-present | 2.0L SKYACTIV-G PE, six-speed manual

Notes

The Super Lock LSD for ND cars is listed for the 2.0L six-speed manual roadster; automatic cars use a different OS Giken part
Installation labor is not included
Use a gear oil intended for clutch-type limited-slip differentials

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
