Öhlins DFV Road & Track Coilovers for FD3S Mazda RX-7

The Mazda RX-7 FD3S already had one of the most celebrated chassis setups of its era, but the factory suspension was never the ceiling of what the platform could do. The Öhlins Road & Track coilover kit for the FD3S builds directly on that foundation; adding patented DFV damping technology, 25 clicks of individual compression and rebound adjustment, and aluminum ball joint top mounts at both ends. Whether the car spends most of its time on canyon roads, autocross courses, or circuit track days, this kit gives the RX-7’s near-perfect weight distribution the suspension hardware it deserves, without giving up the ride quality needed to get there and back comfortably.

DFV Technology and Track Performance

Öhlins’ dual flow valve (DFV) technology is what separates the Road & Track series from conventional coilovers. A single turn of the gold knob clockwise engages race mode across all four damping zones at once; low-speed compression, high-speed compression, low-speed rebound, and high-speed rebound. The DFV internals respond quickly to surface changes on track, keeping the front tires loaded through corners and maintaining consistent contact under hard braking. An internal needle bleed valve also compensates for changes in fluid viscosity as the damper heats up, so performance stays consistent lap after lap without any driver input.

Construction and Adjustment

Front and rear each use an aluminum monotube shock absorber with individual spring preload adjusters and separate damper length adjusters, paired with aluminum ball joint top mounts. The front offers approximately 10-40 mm of lowering adjustment with a 110 N/mm spring rate; the rear provides approximately 5-35 mm of adjustment at the same 110 N/mm rate. The matched spring rates front and rear reflect the RX-7’s balanced weight distribution and keep the car’s natural handling balance intact. Ride height is adjusted by rotating the lower flange on the threaded body, leaving the spring seat in its optimal position at any height setting.

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance.
