Nitron’s 964 elec-TRON R1 Coilover Kit gives a car that left the factory with purely passive dampers the kind of damping control Porsche didn’t offer on the 964 at all. Early-90s 911s ride on fixed-rate dampers that were a compromise the day they were bolted on, and after thirty years of wear they’re a compromise on top of a compromise. Stiffening things up for a track day means giving up the compliance that makes the car pleasant on a rough back road, and softening it for the street costs you the support under braking and turn-in. Nitron’s elec-TRON R1 Coilover Kit removes that trade by replacing each corner with an adjustable coilover that carries an electronically controlled valve, and the Nitron elec-TRON DCU supplied in the box is what decides how that valve behaves from one moment to the next. The front uses the 964’s MacPherson strut layout, with the spring and damper assembly swapped for a coilover unit at each side. The rear stays true to the OEM rear suspension type, working through the same semi-trailing arm with the spring medium converted over to coilover, so the trailing arm geometry, mounting points, and alignment relationship stay exactly as Porsche built them. What changes is how the car manages weight transfer, and that’s most of what separates a 964 that feels loose and tired from one that feels tied down.

At the core of each Nitron elec-TRON R1 damper is a high-speed proportional solenoid valve in place of the fixed valving on a conventional passive damper. Varying the electrical current to the valve changes how stiff the damper is almost instantly, and the valve is updated roughly every 6 milliseconds. That’s fast enough to firm up the front dampers under braking to support the nose, then ease off over a mid-corner bump so the tire stays in contact with the road.

Standalone Electronic Damping System

The 964 never had electronic dampers, so there’s no factory system for this kit to talk to. Nitron solves that by including the elec-TRON DCU, which acts as the brain for the whole setup. The DCU weighs data about the car’s attitude and the forces from braking, cornering, and acceleration, then picks the valve position and damping level at each corner. Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule.
