Considering this dual-purpose nature, the sound and performance objectives for the exhaust were evident—to create an exhaust system that delivers a comfortable and refined experience during cruising, while exuding a raw and powerful sound and character when revving at high speeds.

Cross Sections

• To achieve an optimal balance between torque and increased power, the cross sections of the exhaust system have been deliberately enlarged by approximately 10% compared to the stock configuration. This intentional modification ensures enhanced performance while maintaining the optimal torque-to-power ratio.

The Sound

• Combining Kline’s renowned advancements, the exhaust system incorporates the precise x-pipe geometry that generates their signature fiery roar. Furthermore, it features a valvetronic mechanism, introducing an innovative technology that enables a tranquil and quiet driving experience during cruising, while delivering a captivating, high-pitched, and dynamically resonant vocalization when the valves open. When the valves are closed, the exhaust gases are skillfully redirected through a series of chambers and acoustic segments, effectively eliminating any unwanted noise or resonance within the cabin. However, upon opening the valves, the exhaust system seamlessly transitions into a fully unrestricted flow, optimizing both performance and sound. The gases exclusively pass through Kline’s distinctive x-pipe, artfully enhancing the exhaust note with an intensified pitch.

Performance

• Through the removal of constraints in the silencer section and the implementation of a completely unrestricted flow system when the valves are open, the exhaust system attains maximum efficiency. This modification not only optimizes the performance of the exhaust system but also results in moderate enhancements in both power and torque output. 21hp and 27 nm power and torque gain.

Materials

• The Kline Innovation Audi R8 exhaust system offers a selection of two materials. Firstly, there is the 304 Stainless Steel variant, weighing around 19.5 kilograms. Alternatively, for individuals seeking to reduce weight, there is the option of the F1 Grade Inconel 625 version, weighing approximately 9.0 kilograms.
  • Stainless Steel:
    • 304-grade stainless steel has solidified its position as the predominant industry standard for exhaust manufacturing. This particular type of stainless steel offers a well-balanced combination of moderate strength, thermochemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production. It enables the construction of exhaust systems that are relatively affordable while delivering a high level of functionality and durability. However, it is important to note that stainless steel is relatively heavy. While it shares a similar density to regular steel, its tensile strength is slightly reduced. This limitation restricts the potential for constructing high-performance exhaust components using stainless steel. Additionally, in terms of sound characteristics, the thicker sidewalls required by stainless steel may result in a slightly less vibrant and dynamic exhaust note compared to the other materials mentioned earlier.
  • Inconel:
    • Inconel 625, highly valued for its essential role in the aerospace industry where durability and heat resistance are of utmost importance, is extensively utilized in the production of critical components like exhaust turbine blades for high-performance jet engines. Remarkably, Inconel is also the preferred choice for Formula One exhaust systems and has been selected by manufacturers involved in prestigious hypercar projects such as the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. These applications benefit significantly from Inconel’s exceptional ability to withstand extreme temperatures exceeding 1000°C while prioritizing lightweight design.
    • Inconel showcases exceptional properties, including notably high tensile strength and remarkable thermochemical stability. Its tensile strength rivals that of titanium, resulting in an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. Consequently, Inconel enables the use of thin sidewall materials while maintaining structural integrity, resulting in the production of lightweight components that resist fatigue over time. However, working with Inconel presents certain challenges due to its challenging machinability and welding requirements, requiring specialized skills and time-consuming techniques. Furthermore, the unique properties and specialized manufacturing processes of Inconel contribute to its higher cost as a raw material.
