The Lamborghini Aventador, the latest flagship model from the esteemed Italian automaker, showcases its power with a 690hp V12 engine and an aggressive styling that leaves a lasting impression. Recognizing the opportunity to enhance this iconic supercar, Kline took on the challenge of designing and building the ultimate Aventador exhaust system. Employing ultra lightweight Inconel 625, the design brief for Kline was clear: to deliver unrivaled sound performance and achieve remarkable lightness.

The Sound

• At Kline, it was evident that the factory Aventador exhaust system did not capture the raw nature of this supercar, prompting the need for something truly exceptional. The primary objective for Kline was to create an exhaust system that would emit a captivating scream at high revs while maintaining near-stock quietness during cruising speeds.
• With valve closure, the exhaust gases are intelligently guided through a series of chambers and acoustic sections to eliminate any undesirable drone. When the valves are open, the exhaust system transitions into a fully unrestricted flow, optimizing performance and sound. Kline’s signature tight-radius X-pipe raises the pitch of the exhaust note, resulting in a remarkably aggressive and fiery vocalization when the valves are open—a distinctive “demon screaming” sound.

Performance

• By removing restrictions and implementing a completely free-flowing system when the valves are open, Kline achieves optimal efficiency from the exhaust, leading to moderate power and torque gains. The exhaust upgrade yields an increase of 23hp and 29nm in power and torque. It’s important to note that these gains are calculated after compensating for air-fuel ratios through software adjustments for the exhaust upgrade. To fully experience the performance potential of the exhaust upgrade, Kline recommends considering an ECU tune.

Stainless Steel

• Within the exhaust manufacturing domain, the industry has traditionally relied on the established standard of 304-grade stainless steel. This grade provides a well-balanced combination of moderate strength, thermochemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production. It enables the construction of exhaust systems that strike a practical balance between affordability and functionality, ensuring long-term durability. However, it’s worth noting that stainless steel is relatively heavier compared to alternative materials. Although its density is similar to regular steel, it possesses slightly lower tensile strength. As a result, stainless steel has limitations when it comes to creating high-performance exhaust components and may result in a somewhat subdued and less vibrant exhaust note compared to other materials.

Inconel

• When durability and heat resistance are of utmost importance, Inconel 625 emerges as the ultimate choice widely employed in the aerospace industry. This exceptional material finds extensive application in the manufacturing of critical components, particularly exhaust turbine blades for high-performance jet engines. Inconel is highly favored in Formula One exhaust systems and has been chosen by manufacturers involved in prestigious hypercar projects such as the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. The advantages of Inconel lie in its high tensile strength and excellent thermochemical stability. With a tensile strength comparable to that of titanium, it achieves an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. This allows for the use of thin sidewall materials while maintaining structural integrity, facilitating the production of lightweight components that demonstrate exceptional resistance to fatigue over extended periods. However, working with Inconel presents challenges due to its difficult machinability and specific welding requirements, demanding specialized skills and time-consuming techniques. Additionally, the unique properties and specialized manufacturing processes associated with Inconel contribute to its higher cost as a raw material.

Heat Shield

• For customers prioritizing effective heat management, Kline offers meticulously designed heat protection solutions crafted from embossed stainless steel sheets. Skilled artisans meticulously create and weld each heat shield to ensure optimal performance. By integrating these heat shields onto the manifolds, Kline effectively mitigates heat soak, improves scavenging, and enhances overall performance, resulting in a cooler engine temperature.
