Kline Innovation Valvetronic Exhaust System for 980 Porsche Carrera GT

The Porsche Carrera GT, armed with a race-derived 5.7L V10 mid-engine, generates an impressive 603hp, with a 0-60 time of just 3.9 seconds. Starting from scratch, various points of enhancement over the OEM and many existing sports exhausts were examined. The primary objectives were to boost power, reshape and accentuate the sound, and reduce the weight by half.

The Sound

• The sound is further refined by the company’s trademark 1D CLR X pipe, which raises the pitch to a genuine F1 tone. With the valves open, gases directly pass through the X pipe, bypassing the silencer, resulting in a raw, pure, high-pitched F1 scream. With the valve closed, gases are directed through a specially designed harmonically tuned silencer, eliminating cruising drone entirely and providing a comfortable ride when needed, and a roaring race car sound when desired! It’s available in standard 304-grade stainless steel or Formula One-grade Inconel 625 for the pinnacle of lightweight, exotic exhaust systems.

Performance

• For optimal performance, adjusting air-fuel ratios after installing the exhaust is recommended.

Stainless Steel

• 304-grade stainless steel is often chosen in exhaust manufacturing for its durability, thermal stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. However, when used in high-performance exhaust components, its considerable weight and limited tensile strength can pose challenges. Moreover, the requirement for thicker walls may potentially affect the sound of the exhaust negatively.

Inconel

• In contrast, Inconel 625 is admired for its toughness and heat resistance. It is typically selected to fabricate vital parts such as high-performance jet engine exhaust turbine blades. It’s also the preferred material for Formula One exhaust systems and prestigious hypercar projects like the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. Despite Inconel’s ability to withstand temperatures above 1000°C and its emphasis on lightweight design, it brings with it unique complexities due to intricate machinability and specialized welding requirements.
