Featuring a 4.0 TFSI twin scroll twin turbo V8 engine, the RS7 showcases a remarkable blend of modern engineering and elegance, delivering a powerful 605hp. Like all turbocharged engines, there is significant potential for enhancing the exhaust sound and power response through exhaust tuning.

The Innovation

• The replacement of the stock 600cpsi catalysts, with either high flow HJS cores or racing pipes, significantly enhances the sound and drastically improves turbo spool, resulting in increased power and reduced spool time. This is further complemented by the twin 70mm dual oversized pipe, enabling the engine to reach its full potential.
• Incorporating a 20-degree x pipe into the center section raises the pitch of the exhaust. With v8 engines featuring a cross plane crank configuration, this modification generates significant additional power by alleviating pressure spikes associated with the uneven firing pattern. The option of a resonated (silenced) or non-resonated center section is also available to accommodate specific sound requirements.
• In terms of the rear silencer section, a set of lightweight, valvetronic rear silencers has been crafted to work in conjunction with the car’s stock electronic actuated valve system. When the valves are open, the system allows for completely freeflow exhaust, optimizing performance and creating an aggressive sound. Upon valve closure, exhaust gases are directed through a series of chambers and acoustic-filled sections tuned to enhance low rpm torque while maintaining a very quiet volume during cruising speeds.

Materials

• Stainless Steel:
  • The prevailing industry standard for exhaust manufacturing is the utilization of 304-grade stainless steel. This specific stainless steel grade offers a well-balanced combination of moderate strength, thermochemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production. It allows for the construction of exhaust systems that are both reasonably priced and highly functional, ensuring durability. However, it is important to note that stainless steel is relatively heavier compared to other materials. Although it shares a similar density with regular steel, its tensile strength is slightly lower. This limitation restricts the potential for creating high-performance exhaust components using stainless steel. Moreover, when it comes to sound characteristics, the thicker sidewalls required by stainless steel may result in a slightly less vibrant and dynamic exhaust note when compared to the aforementioned materials.
• Inconel:
  • In ensuring durability and heat resistance within the aerospace industry, the utilization of Inconel 625 plays a crucial role. This exceptional material finds extensive applications in manufacturing critical components, particularly exhaust turbine blades for high-performance jet engines. It is worth noting that Inconel is the preferred choice for Formula One exhaust systems and has been selected by manufacturers involved in prestigious hypercar projects such as the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. These applications greatly benefit from Inconel’s remarkable ability to withstand extreme temperatures surpassing 1000°C while prioritizing lightweight design.
  • Inconel exhibits extraordinary properties, including remarkably high tensile strength and outstanding thermochemical stability. Its tensile strength is comparable to that of titanium, resulting in an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. As a result, Inconel enables the use of thin sidewall materials while maintaining structural integrity, facilitating the production of lightweight components that exhibit resistance to fatigue over extended periods. However, working with Inconel poses certain challenges due to its difficult machinability and specific welding requirements, necessitating specialized skills and time-consuming techniques. Additionally, the unique properties and specialized manufacturing processes associated with Inconel contribute to its higher cost as a raw material.
