Kline Innovation Turboback Exhaust System for 996.2 Porsche 911 GT2

The Kline’s primary marque, Porsche 996 GT2, has several notable issues with the factory exhaust, including its sound, torque curves, peak power, turbo lag, and excess weight, especially as it’s positioned at the car’s far rear.

The Sound

• The factory exhaust’s sound is notably underwhelming, largely due to several chambers, 600 cell catalysts, and an imbalance between opposing banks. However, swapping the stock cats for 100cpsi, 200cpsi, or racing pipes, and replacing the chambered transverse rear silencer with free-flow, harmonically tuned silencers can greatly enhance the sound quality. Adding Kline’s signature 1D CLR laminar flow X pipe elevates the exhaust pitch, reducing cabin penetration of bass noise during hard throttle and high revs, and creating a rich and robust tone. Although Kline pioneered this design, many imitations have started to surface.

Performance

• Given that it’s a turbo car, there’s substantial potential for performance enhancement through exhaust and software modifications. Kline’s racing system version provides the most significant gains: 40hp and 64nm, or 70hp and 94nm when paired with software. The 100cpsi and 200cpsi options offer smaller increases of 21hp and 16hp, respectively.

Stainless Steel

• The exhaust manufacturing industry often favors 304-grade stainless steel due to its strength, thermal stability, affordability, and ease of fabrication. However, stainless steel’s weight and limited tensile strength can hinder its high-performance exhaust use. The thicker walls needed for stainless steel might also mute the exhaust sound.

Inconel

• Inconel 625, widely valued in the aerospace industry for its durability and heat resistance, is commonly used in crafting critical parts such as high-performance jet engine exhaust turbine blades. It’s the material of choice for Formula One exhaust systems and high-profile hypercar projects like the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. Despite its ability to withstand temperatures above 1000°C and emphasis on lightweight design, Inconel requires specialized skills and intricate procedures due to its complex machinability and specific welding needs.

Carbon Fiber

• Carbon fiber reinforced polymer is highly sought after in various sectors, including the automotive and aerospace industries, due to its high tensile strength-to-weight ratio, which makes it strong yet lightweight. Integrating carbon fiber components can reduce weight and increase stiffness, ultimately improving the vehicle’s overall dynamics.
