What oil should I use, and is it included?

Oil is not included. The manufacturer recommends a fully synthetic differential oil and warns that the oil choice can change the performance of the unit considerably. Installation labor is not included either, and the installer should work from the vehicle service manual for the FD2.

Will the 1.5-Way LSD for FD2 fit a US-market Civic Si?

That is not confirmed. The 1.5-Way LSD for FD2 cars is built for the transmission in the Japanese-market FD2 Civic Type R sedan, and the manufacturer warns it may not fit the US-market FG Civic. For any other Civic, ask Bulletproof Automotive to check compatibility first.

Is it noisy on the street?

The manufacturer paid particular attention to quietness and says chatter noise in street driving is suppressed as far as possible without reducing lockup. It credits the new RS clutch plates for staying quiet while transferring more torque, so the unit can live on a road car as well as a race car.

What does 1.5-way mean for the FD2?

A 1.5-way unit locks fully under acceleration and only partly when you lift off. On a front-drive FD2 that puts power down out of corners while keeping the car calmer and easier to turn in on deceleration than a 2-way unit. The cam angles of 50 and 25 set those two behaviors.

Why is the initial setting only 6.5kg?

The design philosophy is that lockup should come from throttle input, not high preload. The manufacturer says heavy initial torque is often mistaken for strength, while its disc spring setup gives lockup that follows the accelerator, so the driver feels stable without the vibration and noise that heavy preload brings.

Description

J’s Racing 1.5-Way LSD for FD2 Honda Civic Type R

J’s Racing’s 1.5-Way LSD for FD2 Civic Type R sedans is the Osaka tuner’s High Traction mechanical differential, developed in competition and run everywhere from street cars to Super Taikyu. Its 50-25 cam angles and a 6.5kg cold initial setting reflect J’s Racing’s view that a good LSD should lock in proportion to the throttle rather than lean on high preload. The result, as J’s Racing describes it, is predictable lockup and stable behavior, with chatter kept low enough for road use. It suits an FD2 that already spins its inside front wheel out of slow corners; a gently driven street car will rarely use what it offers.

Design and Performance

Since its first LSD, J’s Racing has used disc springs, whose force can stay steady at small deflection and then rise or fall beyond a set point, unlike a coil spring. Tuning that curve is how it achieves smooth lockup without the vibration in tight turns, clunks or off-throttle instability that large plates often bring. The pinion and side gears are high-strength gear steel with special heat treatment.

Features

About J’s Racing

J’s Racing was established in Osaka in 1989, as VTEC engines and lightweight Civics and Integras were changing what a Honda could do, and it has built parts for Hondas ever since. The company develops engine response, suspension, braking, cooling and aerodynamics together as one system, then proves the parts in time attack, gymkhana, endurance and circuit racing. Its Fit lapped Tsukuba Circuit in 1’00.459, and its naturally aspirated AP1 S2000, the Maou car, became the company’s reference build for the Honda roadster. Every J’s Racing part is designed and tested in Japan, and J’s Racing USA in Carson, California handles distribution in the United States.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
