The 992 Turbo engine is another modern marvel from Porsche. IPD had the unique opportunity to access a 992 for an extensive development and testing program without any time restrictions. This unrestricted access was invaluable, allowing IPD to thoroughly examine every aspect of engineering and design to create the best-performing Plenum possible. Like all previous IPD Turbo Plenums, the 992 Plenum is designed for efficiency, offering significant horsepower and torque gains through its patented “Y” design, which optimizes airflow for enhanced engine performance. The Plenum has been proven to deliver substantial gains across both power bands, guaranteeing an elevated driving experience for any Turbo.

Development

• Development began with a 1D simulation to optimize the handling of pulse peaks in the intake tract by experimenting with different pipe geometries and utilizing known engine parameters of the 992. The process then advanced to optimizing 2D slices of the plenum using CFD, focusing on areas where adverse pressure gradients might cause flow separation. This allowed adjustments to the curvatures on the plenum faces, enhancing the understanding of airflow behavior inside the pipe at full throttle. Once satisfied with the 2D slices, the development progressed to 3D modeling, incorporating all necessary geometry to create a plug-and-play, bolt-on part with optimal performance characteristics. After hundreds of iterations in both geometry and CFD analysis, the team was pleased not only with the increased mass flow compared to the stock intake but also with the uniformity of charge pressure and velocity across both branches.

Power

• The efficiencies of the Plenum significantly reduce initial turbo lag at lower RPMs, allowing quicker access to power and torque. However, the majority of the power and torque gains are realized from 4000 RPM to redline, where they are most needed and appreciated. The horsepower and torque gains continue to increase, outperforming the factory air distributor as the engine revs higher. Peak gains of over 35 wheel horsepower and 35 wheel torque are achieved above 6000 RPM. The 992 Turbo Plenum delivers impressive power and torque gains, elevating the performance of the already powerful Turbo and providing an exhilarating driving experience.
