The HKS Black S-Type Oil Cooler Kit for the FL5 Honda Civic Type R is engineered for sustained high-load driving, with development focused on maintaining stable oil temperatures during demanding use such as +R Mode operation. Designed as a complete thermal-management solution optimized for the FL5 platform, the system uses an air duct layout that preserves the original front-end styling while directing a strong supply of fresh air straight into the oil cooler core for maximum cooling efficiency. Just as important, the ducting and airflow path are shaped to promote smooth evacuation after air passes through the core, helping optimize airflow throughout the entire system for consistent performance over longer sessions. A core protector is included to help shield the cooler from road debris, rounding out a purpose-built kit aimed at maximum thermal management performance.

Development Concept

• Compared to the FK8, the Civic Type R FL5 delivered notable gains in handling, power output, and aerodynamics, but HKS testing and durability evaluation identified a clear limitation; oil temperatures can climb quickly under sustained high-load driving. To counter this, HKS adapted the proven FK8 cooling layout by using the left front fender mounting location while redesigning the system to better suit the FL5 platform. With coolant temperature and A/C performance in mind, the oil cooler core placement was optimized to maximize thermal efficiency. Wind tunnel development also showed that the factory front bumper airflow alone is not sufficient for consistent cooling, which led HKS to create a larger air duct and dedicated air guide to feed a stronger supply of fresh air directly into the oil cooler core and unlock more of the system’s potential. Evacuation of heated air was refined as well, with repeated aerodynamic testing used to achieve smooth discharge after airflow passes through the core and to balance airflow across the full system. An outlet plate is included to help protect the core from rock damage, and the result is a meaningful reduction in oil temperature rise during demanding use such as circuit driving to support stable peak performance over longer sessions. For the front bumper, HKS offers two duct options; an unpainted injection-molded duct supplied with the kit for high accuracy and cost-effective mass production, or an optional pre-preg carbon fiber duct that is lightweight, highly rigid, and finished in dry carbon, with each piece handcrafted and delivered clear coated with metal mesh installed.
