Which turbochargers take the G Series Speed Sensor Street Kit?

Garrett lists this Speed Sensor Street Kit for G Series turbochargers and for the GTX47, GTX50 and GTX55 Gen II. GTX28, GTX30 and GTX35 Gen II models, along with GT and GTW turbochargers, use the threaded GT and GTX kit, part 781328-0001, instead, because the two sensors mount differently.

How does the G Series sensor mount?

It pushes into the speed sensor port on the compressor housing, sealed by an O-ring, and is held in place by a bolt torqued to 5 to 6 Nm, or 44 to 53 in-lb. Garrett lists the bolt as part of the G Series kits. The GT and GTX sensor threads in with a lock nut instead.

What does the gauge show?

The gauge displays compressor wheel speed from the sensor, and Garrett gives it a maximum speed recall function that keeps the highest wheel speed for five minutes. That lets the driver check the peak after a run and compare it with the maximum allowable speed of the turbocharger.

Do I need the Street or the Pro kit?

Choose the Street kit for a gauge in the cabin. Choose the Pro kit, 781328-0004 for G Series, if the speed signal will go only to a data logger or engine management system. Garrett states that all of its speed sensor kits work with data loggers, so the Street kit can log as well.

Is a speed sensor worth fitting to a G Series turbo?

Garrett publishes a maximum allowable turbocharger speed for every G Series model and warns that exceeding it can cause damage and premature failure. A sensor shows where the shaft actually runs, helps confirm the turbocharger match, and lets a tuner keep boost targets inside the compressor map.

Description

Garrett Speed Sensor Street Kit, G Series Models with Gauge

Garrett’s Speed Sensor Street Kit for G Series models measures compressor wheel speed on Garrett’s G Series turbochargers and on the GTX47, GTX50 and GTX55 Gen II, and shows it on the included Garrett gauge. The G Series sensor differs from the GT and GTX type: it carries an O-ring, pushes into the port and is held by a bolt torqued to 5 to 6 Nm, and Garrett lists a bolt in this kit. With a maximum speed recall that holds the peak reading for five minutes, the gauge suits owners who want to check shaft speed after a pull. Owners who log through an ECU instead should look at the G Series Pro kit.

Reading the Numbers

Garrett explains that boost and shaft speed plotted together on a compressor map show the operating conditions for peak power over a wider range. The same data confirms the turbocharger match and shows whether it is running near its maximum speed.

Features

Speed sensor, wiring loom, gauge and bolt for G Series compressor housings
O-ring sealed push-in sensor, retained by a bolt torqued to 5 to 6 Nm (44 to 53 in-lb)
Gauge with maximum speed recall, holding the highest wheel speed for five minutes
Signal wire can also feed a data logger alongside the gauge

What’s Included

Speed sensor
Wiring loom
Gauge
Bolt

Applications

The Speed Sensor Street Kit is not vehicle specific. Garrett lists this version by turbocharger family:

Garrett families: G Series, GTX47 Gen II, GTX50 Gen II and GTX55 Gen II
Not for: GT, GTW, GTX and GTX28, GTX30 and GTX35 Gen II turbochargers

Notes

For GT and GTX turbochargers, choose the GT and GTX version among the Garrett speed sensor kits
A Pro version without a gauge, for data logger installs, is also available
Garrett recommends installation by a qualified automotive technician
Allow the engine to cool before installation, as turbocharger parts can be extremely hot

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
