What does the Speed Sensor Pro Kit connect to?

The Speed Sensor Pro Kit connects to a data logger or engine management system. Garrett wires the sensor to a 5 volt supply from the logger, with the green wire carrying the speed signal and the black wire going to logger ground. No gauge and no logger come in the kit.

How does the logger turn the signal into rpm?

The sensor outputs a square wave at one eighth of the blade passing frequency, meaning one pulse per compressor blade before the division. Garrett gives a conversion based on blade count, and for a 12-blade wheel the logger multiplies the signal frequency by 40 to show shaft rpm.

Will the Pro Kit work on a G Series turbocharger?

No. This is the GT and GTX version, and Garrett states that GT and GTX speed sensor kits are not applicable on G Series turbochargers. G Series models, along with the GTX47, GTX50 and GTX55 Gen II, use the G Series Pro kit, part 781328-0004.

Can the Pro Kit protect the turbocharger from overspeed?

It can help. Garrett notes that the kit can be used with an aftermarket ECU to limit compressor speed, so a calibration that reads the signal can hold the turbocharger under its maximum allowable speed. The sensor itself only measures speed, and the protection comes from the engine management.

Is the sensor hard to install on a GTX Gen II?

GTX Gen II compressor housings already have a fully machined port, so the plug comes out with a 5mm Allen key and the threaded sensor goes in, with its tip set 0.8mm from the blade edge per the Garrett instructions. Garrett recommends a qualified automotive technician for the installation.

Description

Garrett Speed Sensor Pro Kit, GT and GTX Models without Gauge

Garrett’s Speed Sensor Pro Kit for GT and GTX models is the gauge-free version of Garrett’s turbocharger speed sensor, made to send compressor wheel speed to a data logger or engine management system rather than a dash display. Garrett lists it for GTX Gen II, GTX, GT and GTW turbochargers. The sensor threads into the compressor housing port, and its output is a square wave at one eighth of the blade passing frequency, which the logger converts to shaft rpm. It suits a tuned car with a capable ECU or logger. A driver who wants to see speed on the dash should buy the Street kit instead.

What the Data Does

Garrett notes that shaft speed data can approximate engine airflow without a flow bench, confirm that the turbocharger is correctly matched, and show whether it is close to its speed limit. Paired with an aftermarket ECU, the same signal can be used to limit compressor speed.

Features

Speed sensor and wiring loom with no gauge, for logger or ECU input
Square wave output at one eighth of blade passing frequency, converted to rpm by blade count
Threaded GT and GTX style sensor with lock nut, tightened with a 10mm wrench
Runs from a 5 volt sensor supply provided by the logger

What’s Included

Speed sensor
Wiring loom

Applications

The Speed Sensor Pro Kit is not vehicle specific. Garrett lists it by turbocharger family:

Garrett families: GTX Gen II, GTX, GT and GTW
Not for: G Series turbochargers or the GTX47, GTX50 and GTX55 Gen II
Required: Data logger or engine management system with a 5 volt sensor supply

Notes

No gauge and no data logger are included; a Street version with a gauge is listed among the Garrett speed sensor kits
Not for G Series turbochargers, which take the G Series Pro kit
Garrett recommends installation by a qualified automotive technician
Compressor housings without a machined port must be machined to the Garrett drawings before fitting the sensor

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
