Is it safe to change springs on the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate?

With care. Garrett warns that the springs in the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate are under pressure and can cause injury if installed wrongly, so wear eye protection. Seat each spring in its diaphragm groove and align the longest spring with its groove in the cap before tightening.

Can the gate mount directly to the turbine housing?

No. Garrett is explicit on this point: a turbine housing mount is not allowed. Weld the inlet flange to a runner branching off the exhaust manifold or collector upstream of the turbine, and pair the gate with a free-float turbine housing so it is the only wastegate in the system.

What exhaust temperature can it take?

Garrett gives a peak exhaust temperature of up to 1050C, or 1922F, for the stainless valve housing. In the Garrett thermal cycle test, the actuator body reached 270C without cooling and 130C with liquid cooling, so the coolant ports earn their place on a hot, high-output engine.

What fittings and hose does it use?

Air ports are M10x1.0 with banjo fittings to a hose barb for 6mm, or 0.25 in, ID hose. Water ports are M8x1.0 with fittings to AN-3. Garrett supplies the fittings, washers and plugs for unused ports, so only the hose, coolant lines and their end fittings need to be sourced.

What base pressure is it set to?

Garrett ships the GVW-50 at 1 bar, or 14.5 psi. The spring chart covers combinations from 0.2 to 1.6 bar, or 3 to 23 psi, calculated at a 1:1 boost to backpressure ratio, and a boost controller can add pressure above the spring setting.

Description

Garrett GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate Kit, Black

Garrett’s GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate in black is a 50mm external gate with a black anodized actuator cover, for big-power builds where the wastegate must handle high exhaust flow and heat. Garrett rates the stainless valve housing for exhaust peaks up to 1050C (1922F) and gives clear mounting guidance: a 45 degree connection with a smooth transition is ideal, and the gate must never be fitted to the turbine housing. It is the right size for many large-frame turbocharger builds on free-float housings, and more valve than a small engine needs.

Mounting

The runner shape decides how much of the 50mm valve capacity the engine actually gets. Garrett states that a 90 degree connection can cut flow capacity by up to 50 percent and cause over boosting, and that steeper angles reduce flow further, so a 45 degree runner with a smooth transition is the target.

Features

50mm valve rated for exhaust peaks to 1050C (1922F)
V-band inlet and outlet with weld flanges supplied
Liquid-cooled actuator for hot installations
Black anodized cover on the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 50mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 23 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, black anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-50 wastegate, black
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-50 is also sold in red, blue and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
