What base pressure does the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate ship at?

Garrett assembles the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate at 1 bar, or 14.5 psi. With different spring combinations it can be set from 0.2 bar to 1.7 bar, which is 3 to 25 psi. Garrett bases those figures on a 1:1 boost to backpressure ratio.

What angle should the wastegate runner be?

About 45 degrees to the exhaust flow, with a smooth transition. Garrett states that a 90 degree runner can reduce flow capacity by up to 50 percent and cause over boosting. A well-designed runner lets a 40mm valve do the job it was sized for.

How hot can the exhaust get?

Garrett rates the stainless valve housing for peak exhaust temperatures up to 1050C, or 1922F. The actuator is the part to protect from heat, and Garrett measured it at 270C without cooling and 130C with liquid cooling in its thermal cycle test.

Is silver the same wastegate as the other colours?

Yes. Garrett makes the GVW-40 in red, blue, black and silver. The colour is the anodized finish on the actuator cover, while the valve, housing, springs, diaphragm and kit hardware are the same, so the choice is purely about appearance.

Should I connect the coolant ports?

It is worth doing when the gate sits close to hot exhaust or in a tight engine bay. Both AN-3 water ports must be used so coolant loops through the actuator body. Uncooled installs remain an option, using the supplied plugs to close the ports.

Description

Garrett GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate Kit, Silver

Garrett’s GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate in silver is the plainest finish of Garrett’s smallest GVW, a silver anodized actuator cover over a stainless valve housing Garrett rates to 1050C (1922F). It suits a small to mid-size turbocharger on a free-float housing and offers the widest spring range in the GVW family, from 0.2 to 1.7 bar. How it performs depends heavily on the manifold: Garrett states that placing it at 90 degrees to the flow can cut flow capacity by up to half, so the runner design matters as much as the valve size. It is undersized for big-frame turbocharger builds.

Mounting Matters

Garrett states the ideal wastegate connection is at 45 degrees with a smooth transition from the manifold. At 90 degrees, flow capacity can fall by up to 50 percent and the engine can over boost, and angles beyond 90 degrees reduce flow further. The gate must never be fitted to the turbine housing.

Features

40mm valve with a 1050C (1922F) rated stainless housing
Springs from 0.2 to 1.7 bar, the widest GVW range
V-band inlet and outlet with weld flanges supplied
Silver anodized cover on the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 40mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.7 bar (3 to 25 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, silver anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-40 wastegate, silver
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-40 is also sold in red, blue and black, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
