How much horsepower does the 88mm GTX5533R Gen II Super Core support?

Garrett rates the 88mm GTX5533R Gen II Super Core at 1000 to 1900 horsepower on 3.0L to 12.0L engines, with compressor flow up to 172 lbs/min. The rating is based on compressor choke flow and represents potential flywheel horsepower rather than a guaranteed result.

88mm or 85mm: what is the trade?

Both use the 133mm exducer and the 0.88 A/R compressor housing. The 88mm wheel, 44 trim, adds about 12 lbs/min of flow and 140 horsepower of rating over the 85mm, at a small cost in boost response. If the target sits above roughly 1700 horsepower, the 88mm is the better fit.

What is the difference between this core and the SFI version?

Garrett offers SFI supercore and turbine options for the GTX5533R, and Turn 14 lists 851285-5007S as the 88mm SFI core. This part, 851285-5002S, is the standard 88mm core. Racers whose sanctioning body requires SFI-certified turbocharger parts should choose the SFI version.

Will my GTX55 turbine housing fit?

Yes. Garrett lists its GTX55 turbine kits as interchangeable with GT and GTX 5533 and 5544 supercores, and states Gen II GTX turbochargers work with existing GT and GTX turbine housing kits. That covers V-band and T6 inlet housings from 1.12 to 1.40 A/R.

Should I fit a speed sensor?

It is a good idea. Garrett caps the GTX5533R Gen II at 84,000 rpm and states that higher speeds are at the risk of the owner. The compressor housing has a machined port, plugged from the factory and opened with a 5mm Allen key, ready for a Garrett sensor sold separately.

Description

Garrett GTX5533R Gen II Super Core, 88mm Compressor Inducer

Garrett’s GTX5533R Gen II Super Core in 88mm form steps up from the entry 85mm wheel to a 44 trim inducer, flowing 172 lbs/min, and Garrett rates it at 1000 to 1900 horsepower on engines from 3.0L to 12.0L. It still uses the 0.88 A/R compressor housing, so it keeps much of the smaller core’s response while adding headroom. That makes it a strong match for a big-block or large LS-style V8 targeting 1500 to 1800 horsepower. A build pushing past 2000 horsepower should look at the 91mm and larger GTX5533R cores.

Compressor Side

Garrett machines the inlet, outlet and ported shroud of the Gen II compressor housing, and describes the shroud as an improved design for surge resistance. The backplate is lightweight billet and the compressor outlet is a V-band joint. Garrett also offers SFI supercore and turbine options for this size, listed separately.

Features

88mm inducer, 44 trim, flowing up to 172 lbs/min
0.88 A/R compressor housing with a V-band outlet
Fully machined speed sensor port, plugged from the factory

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 88mm and 133mm
Compressor trim: 44
Compressor housing A/R: 0.88
Turbine inducer and exducer: 112mm and 102mm
Turbine trim: 84
Compressor flow: Up to 172 lbs/min
Maximum turbocharger speed: 84,000 rpm

Applications

The GTX5533R Gen II Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett matches it to engine size and output:

Engine displacement: 3.0L to 12.0L
Power range: 1000 to 1900 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett GTX55 turbine kits: V-band inlet in 1.24 or 1.40 A/R, standard or long outlet with cross bolts; T6 inlet in 1.12, 1.24 or 1.40 A/R; all with a V-band outlet

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett lists seven GTX55 turbine housings for 5533 and 5544 cores
Every GTX55 housing Garrett lists is free float, so an external wastegate is required
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 84,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause damage and premature failure
The SFI version of the 88mm GTX5533R Gen II is also listed

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
